SALEM

The Stone Trough in Salem is more than a small-town specialty shop.

It’s a family legacy that has survived 115 years and the home of Lorrie Weingart, whose family has farmed the land for more than a century.

“I had been toying with the idea [of opening a store] for over 10 years. Seven years ago, I opened the barn as a shop, and it has been expanding ever since” said Weingart, owner of the store.

Although the store is open only on weekends from April through December, Weingart says that the flow of customers is steady and that many customers are repeat visitors, coming from as far as Buffalo, N.Y., for the fall open house that began this past weekend and concludes next weekend.

The open houses feature holiday decor, primitives, floral arrangements, repurposed items and much more from 30 local vendors, she said.

Weingart said she hopes that her efforts to create a warm, welcoming home-like venue will warm hearts as families visit the barn that rests on the family farm.
