Stand Down Day for veterans Saturday

The Mahoning County Veterans Service Commission is conducting a Veteran Stand Down Day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. The event will take place at Oakhill Renaissance Place, 345 Oak Hill Ave.
The commission will be offering surplus gear, food and hygiene kits, haircuts, housing and utility assistance and medical and counseling services. Participants must be veterans; please take proof of service and ID. Those with questions should call Susan Skrzynski, commission director, at 330-740-2450.
Be a nature sleuth
SLIPPERY ROCK, PA.
Jennings Environmental Education Center, 2951 Prospect Road, will host a “Nature Detectives: The Case of the Curious Caterpillars” from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday. Guests will observe live caterpillars, go on a caterpillar hunt and have a woolly bear race in the hands-on program designed for families with children 5 and older.
Participants should dress appropriately for the weather and expect to participate in an outdoor learning adventure, rain or shine. The program is free, but registration is required by Friday at www.visitPAparks.com or by calling 724-794-6011. Please indicate the number of adults and number and ages of children being registered.
Trail race, hike planned
SLIPPERY ROCK, PA.
“Miles for McKeever,” a 5K trail race and hike through the woodlands of McKeever Center, is set for 10 a.m. Oct. 18. There will also be a half-mile fun run for children 10 and under. Awards will be given for the top three overall males and females, by age group in 10-year increments, and finisher awards to all participants.
Cost is $30 if participants register by Thursday but will increase to $35 after. Registrations will be accepted until race morning. All pre-registered participants will receive a long-sleeve T-shirt and a finisher’s award. Remaining T-shirts will be first come, first served. Post-race refreshments and snacks will be provided.

Potter to lecture today
YOUNGSTOWN
Julia Galloway, internationally known utilitarian potter, will present a workshop and lecture today in Bliss Hall at Youngstown State University. The workshop will take place from 9 a.m. to noon and again 1 to 2:30 p.m. in the Ceramics Lab, Bliss Hall 1059. At 3 p.m., Galloway will lecture at the McDonough Museum of Art.
The workshop and lecture, sponsored by the YSU Department of Art Visiting Lecture Series, are free and open to the public.
Galloway is both a utilitarian potter and professor who is currently the director of the School of Art and professor at the University of Montana, Missoula
