Staff report

YOUNGSTOWN

The Daliman family of Canfield will be honored at the Alzheimer’s Association’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Oct. 10 at the Watson Tressel Training Site on the campus of Youngstown State University. The event, hosted locally by Greater East Ohio Area Chapter, is the nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. followed by the opening ceremonies at 9:30 then the walk.

A highlight of the day will be the recognition of Jean and J.P. Daliman, who have both lost loved ones to Alzheimer’s and know the journey of those living with the disease and the challenges families and caregivers face.

Mary DeSalvo, the mother of Jean DeSalvo Daliman, died in July 2011, and J.P. Daliman’s mother, Helen Daliman, in January 2013. The family started participating in the Alzheimer’s Association’s Walk and sponsored fundraisers for their team first called “Sweet Mary” then “Helen’s Helpers.” This year, the family merge their mothers’ names establishing the team of “Mary Helen.”

Jean Daliman, a registered nurse, and her husband, an attorney in Girard, are Struthers natives. Both are involved in supporting the Alzheimer’s Association’s Paint the Night Purple gala each Spring.

The Dalimans’ three adult daughters also have been involved in the mission of the Alzheimer’s Association. Lauren Daliman is a registered nurse at Specialty Hospitality at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Youngstown; Dr. Amy Daliman is a cardiologist in Warren, Mich.; and Amanda Booth is a teacher in the East Palestine School System. Booth’s husband, Neale Booth, lost his grandmother to Alzheimer’s. Their 6-month-old daughter, Adrienne, has three great-grandmothers who have succumbed to Alzheimer’s.

Also included in the event is the Promise Garden, a hands-on, mission-focused element of the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, that calls for participants to remember, to honor, to care and to fight Alzheimer’s disease. The four colors of the Promise Garden flowers represent the experience of each participant.

The platinum sponsor for the Walk is Buckeye Health Plan and gold sponsors include Briarfield Healthcare, Vista Care Centers and Sweeney Chevrolet Buick GMC. Comfort Keepers, Mercy Health Foundation and Windsor House, Inc.

Those interested in registering a team may do so by visiting alz.org/walk. Families, friends and co-workers are encouraged to get involved. Additional sponsorships and donations also are being accepted and may be sent to the Alzheimer’s Association, 3695 B, Boardman-Canfield Road, Canfield, OH 44406.
