When Nevaeh Williams, 12, got called to the school office Friday morning, she feared she’d done something wrong.

Principal Misha Scott greeted Nevaeh inside the office at Discovery at Kirkmere, advising her to remove her jacket.

“You’re going to have your picture taken,” the principal told her. “And the reason you’re going to have your picture taken is because you won a Kindle.”

Nevaeh, a seventh-grader, smiled, then clapped her hand over her mouth.

“I’m so happy,” she said.

At last month’s Back to School backpack giveaway, students who visited the district’s food-services table were able to enter a drawing to win the electronic reader. Nevaeh won, but she didn’t know that until Friday. She kind of forgot about it.

Sue Paris, chief of food service at the district, gave Nevaeh her new gadget.

“When we order a certain amount from vendors, they give us free stuff,” Paris said. “We can get things for the kitchen, but I always ask for things we can give the kids.”

Last year, food services gave away an e-reader, too.

“This year, we’re hoping to get even more that we can give away to the kids,” Paris said.

Movie-theater tickets are one possibility.

Food services also gives students smaller items such as pencils, erasers and bracelets every year during National School Lunch and School Breakfast weeks.

Nevaeh, who kept smiling even on her way back to class, said she’s not one of those lucky people who wins random drawings and prizes often. She plans to use her new Kindle for reading at home.

“I love to read,” she said.

She mentioned books such as the “Twilight” and “Divergent” series, but she doesn’t limit her literary tastes.

“I read everything I can get,” Nevaeh said.
