LOWELLVILLE

Lowellville Police and Fire departments are teaming up with Struthers Boy Scout Pack 101 for a common cause – safety. A free event will take place Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m. at Lowellville City Hall, 140 E. Liberty St. There will be stations for fire safety and for creating emergency contact lists and child-safety kits. Additionally, the police department will give away free bicycle helmets, provided by a grant from the American Academy of Pediatrics. The AAP also awarded Lowellville a grant last year.

Mahoning Valley Dems set meeting, fundraiser

LOWELLVILLE

The Mahoning Valley Democratic Club will host an endorsement meeting at 1 p.m. Saturday at Lowellville Mount Carmel Society, 104 Washington St. Members will vote on endorsements of candidates and issues.

Candidates will be allowed to give two-minute speeches. To vote, members must have paid their $10 dues. New members will be permitted to register between 12:15 and 1 p.m.

After the endorsement event, the society and Samuel Adams Beer will host a Beer Fest beginning at 3:30 p.m. Wrist bands for the fest are $5 each. Proceeds will benefit the Wharry family, whose newborn baby will undergo open-heart surgery.

The fest also will include a screening of the Ohio State University football game at 4 p.m., a stein-hoisting competition at 5, and a morra tournament at 6. DonaVito’s Italian Grille will sell food.

Trumbull bike ride

CHAMPION

Trumbull County commissioners and Trumbull County MetroParks Board will have their first Ride With The Commissioners on the Western Reserve Greenway at 10 a.m. Oct. 10.

Refreshments will be provided at 9 a.m. at the Sunside Trailhead, 547 state Route 305 (Center Street East).

The ride will begin at 10 a.m. and proceed south to the Paul E. Heltzel portion of the Greenway, a ride of about 7 miles. The public is invited.

Struthers resurfacing

STRUTHERS

Resurfacing for seven Struthers streets is set to begin Monday and take a week to complete, weather permitting. The project’s estimated $382,000 cost comes from a $149,000 grant from the Ohio Public Works Commission and about $233,000 from a 3-mill tax levy passed by voters in 2014, officials said. The city awarded a contract to Butch & McCree Paving Inc. for the project.

The streets to be repaired are West Omar Street between Youngstown-Poland Road and Eighth Street, Sexton Street from Dogwood to Garfield Streets, Eighth Street from Brandon Avenue to Maplewood Street, Garfield Street from Elm Street to Fifth Street, East Wilson Street from Argonne Street to Poland Avenue, Geneva Avenue from Youngstown-Poland Road to Eighth Street and Stewart Street from Elm Street to Sexton Street.

Smart Choice food

New Hope United Methodist Church, 21 Fairview Ave., is accepting orders for Smart Choice food at the church with cash, check, money order or EBT Card from 6 to 7 p.m. Oct. 8 and 11 a.m. to noon Oct. 12. Orders also will be taken at Niles Community Services, 401 Vienna Ave., from 1:30 to 2:15 p.m. Oct. 13.

Boxes cost $24 to $40 and include meat and vegetables; convenience meals; kids box; breakfast box; seafood box and boneless, skinless chicken-breast box. For $18 there is a special 10-pound chicken-chunks box with the purchase of any other box. Mail orders will be accepted with payment by Oct. 9. Send payment to New Hope UM Church, 21 Fairview Ave., Niles 44446. To receive a receipt, please enclose a self-addressed and stamped envelope.

Online orders at www.smartchoicefood.com will close Oct. 18. A 3 percent handling fee will be added to all online orders.

Drug-related arrests

CAMPBELL

A traffic stop Wednesday evening led to two drug-related arrests.

Police stopped a vehicle near Sixth Street and Park Drive for not having a rear license-plate light. They found a scale, bags and a container with unidentified residue, a report states. Passenger Patrick Leach, 25, of Niles, said the items belonged to him.

Police also found 0.6 gram of suspected cocaine in the socks of passenger Benjamin Peters, 23, of Youngstown, the report states. Leach was taken to Campbell jail and later released. He will be arraigned Tuesday in Campbell Municipal Court on charges of possession of drug paraphernalia.

Peters was held without bond until his arraignment today on charges of possession of cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Theft from vehicle

GIRARD

Police are investigating a theft reported Wednesday from an unlocked vehicle parked on Mohican Drive. The vehicle’s owner said someone had taken an iPhone and a GPS. The estimated value of the items was $1,000.

Man hit by truck dies

EAST LIVERPOOL

East Liverpool police say a man is dead after his daughter hit him with a truck, Vindicator broadcast partner 21 WFMJ-TV reported.

Donald Heacock, 62, died after his daughter, Nicole Wolf, 37, hit him after her brakes failed.

Heacock reportedly was dragged down the road for 70 feet, and later was pronounced dead.

Investigators say the incident was an accident, according to WFMJ.
