Spaghetti dinner for Canizaro-Maloney

Friends and family of Nancy Canizaro-Maloney, a Poland resident suffering from a brain tumor, are planning a spaghetti dinner and Chinese auction fundraiser from 1-6 p.m. Sept. 27 at the Ursuline High School cafeteria. Tickets are priced at $10 for adults and $7 for children 12 and under and can be purchased from Maureen Donofrio at 330-565-7105, Kathy Cain at 330-518-4035 or Jeanette Garvey at jgarvey10@gmail.com. Chinese auction items can be coordinated with Kim DeSantis at 330-502-4697. The event aims to offset medical bills Canizaro-Maloney and her family have incurred over her battle with a tumor that has been releasing chemical meningitis into her brain.

Friends of Poland Library to meet Oct. 6

The Friends of the Poland Library will meet on Oct. 6. There will not be a coffee hour. There will be a business meeting at 10 a.m. with the program following. The program will be given by the Butler Art Museum. Following the program there will be a potluck luncheon. Members are asked to bring a salad, fruit or a casserole, with a serving spoon. Officers will bring dessert. Donations of books, magazines, CDs and DVDs are accepted at each meeting for the Friends of the Poland Library book cart. Dues are $10 yearly, and new members are welcome.

Legacy Dog Rescue looking for shoes

Do you have any new or gently worn pairs of shoes that you aren’t wearing and that are just taking up space? Don’t throw them away. Legacy Dog Rescue would be happy to take them off your hands. They partnered with Wooftrax to raise some funds for their rescue, get the shoes to people that need them and avoid the shoes from getting into a landfill, which helps the environment. All the proceeds received for this event will go directly to funding one of Legacy Dog Rescue’s large community dog and cat food giveaways that they periodically have. They are planning to have one in late November around Thanksgiving. Last November, they gave away more than 6,500 pounds of dog and cat food. How it works is they collect gently worn or new shoes of all types and sizes. Then, Wooftrax picks-up the shoes from them. They refurbish the shoes and get them to people that really need them. Drop boxes are located at Family Video Austintown, Coco Moe’s Tanning on Elm Road, Howland Community Animal Hospital, Lil Paws, The Learning Dog Training Center, Spider Web Music and The Wellness Center in Niles. Basket raffle to help dogs of Mahoning County

Legacy Dog Rescue, Friends of Fido and Youngstown Dogs are hosting a huge basket raffle on Oct. 10 at Davidson’s Restaurant/Tavern, located at 3636 Canfield Road in Canfield, from 2–5 p.m. Eighty great baskets and gift cards will be raffled off. The winner will be drawn at 5 p.m. and need not be present. The Old Goats will be playing from 3-6 p.m. Come out and have a great dinner and a drink with great friends working together to help the dogs of Mahoning County. Shepherd of the Valley to Host Job Fair

Shepherd of the Valley will be hosting a job fair recruiting staff for all five of their locations as well as for their home health agency. Shepherd management will be available to interview and hire on site. The job fair will be Sept. 30 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Shepherd of the Valley, located at 5525 Silica Road in Austintown. Shepherd will be looking to hire for all available positions. Candidates will be able to view positions and interview with the prospective manager. Shepherd asks candidates to make sure to bring photo identification. If interested in a traveling position, also bring proof of auto insurance. Pork-kraut dinner to be Sept. 27

The Youngstown Saxon Club, located at 710 S. Meridian Road, will host its next pork-kraut dinner on Sept. 27 from 11:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. The price of $9.50 for adults and $5 for children includes dessert and coffee, tea or pop. The public is welcome and take-outs will be available.

Knitting guild to meet

The Western Reserve Knitting Guild will host a special knit-in program on Oct. 3 at 10:30 a.m. at the Austintown library, located at at 600 S. Raccoon Road. Pat Jones will instruct members on making Boo Boo Bears, a child friendly soother. Members are to bring various sizes of knitting needles and assorted yarns. Also members are encouraged to bring a finger food snack to share. The library is not sponsoring or participating in this event. Class of 1956 to have reunion

The Chaney High School Class of 1956 has planned a luncheon reunion for Oct. 9 at 11:30 a.m. at the Belleria Pizza and Italian Restaurant located on South Meridian Road. Historical program to feature early settlers

The Poland Historical Society is sponsoring a “Dressed for the Day” program on Oct. 3 at the historic Poland Presbyterian Church from 1-3 p.m. Presenters will provide a narrated demonstration about the cultural history, clothing and daily life of the early settlers of this area, followed by a tea. Cruiser Classic 5K – inaugural custom car run/walk seeking participants

The inaugural Cruiser Classic 5k Run Walk will take place at the Free Methodist Church in New Middletown in conjunction with the Custom Car Show. The run/walk takes place on Sept. 26. Registration opens at 7:30 a.m. and the race starts at 9 a.m. at the Free Methodist Church, located at 9900 Youngstown-Pittsburg Road in New Middletown. This 3.1 mile race travels along the back roads in a safe and secure location. It’s a trip through a true custom car experience along with custom cars at every turn. The event is being officially timed and mapped by Boardman Second Sole. All proceeds will benefit the STCCC, Springfield Townships Local Food Bank. The start and finish will be at Springfield Township Custom Car Show at the Free Methodist Church. There are seven age groups from the youngest to the oldest with medals being presented to the top three males and females in each age group and the top three runners overall. Shirts are guaranteed for the first 100 registered. Pre-registration is $15 and race day registration is $20. Relay for Life benefit sale

A two-day benefit sale will take place on Sept. 26 at 28 Island Drive in Poland. Hours are 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. both days. Several baskets will be raffled off, containing gifts cards, cash or fun holiday crafts and decorations. This benefit will also include a bake sale and trash and treasure items. Start your holiday shopping early and support a great cause. All proceeds will be donated to the American Cancer Society and the Poland Relay for Life.

Dressed for the day

Members of the Poland Historical Society have planned an exciting afternoon featuring historical authors Mary K. Inman and Louise Pence. Inman and Pence are experts on clothing and everyday life in the late 18th century and early 19th century, and they have co-authored two illustrated paper doll history books. They will provide a narrated demonstration about the clothing, cultural history and daily life of early settlers to Town One, Range One of the Connecticut Western Reserve which is currently known as Poland. Following their presentation, Poland Historical Society members will host an afternoon tea. The event will take place on Oct. 3 at Poland Presbyterian Church from 1-3 p.m. The cost is $20 per person. This program is for caregivers and their little ones between 6-23 months at the Poland library at 10 a.m. The program will take place every Wednesday in September, and will include twenty minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.

This program is for children ages 2 and 3 and their caregivers at the Poland library at 10:30 a.m. every Thursday in September. Join the library for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child become a successful reader.

Join the Poland library for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult. This event will take place every Thursday in September at 1 p,m,

Gotta Move story time

This program is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a caregiver. The Poland library will host Gotta Move story time at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 28. Join them for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, and talk and play.

Trim a tree for September

Children of all ages can stop by the Poland library during regular hours in September to decorate an ornament for their all-seasons tree.

Banned books hunt

Do you know any banned books? Find the covers of banned books hidden in the library, unravel the secret message and be entered in a drawing for one of two prizes. One tween and one teen will win. This hunt will take place at the Poland library during regular library hours from Sept. 1 - Oct. 3. The hunt is for tweens in grades 4-6 and teens grades 7-12.

Read, rap and Snack

Join Poland library’s teen book club for the September meeting, taking place on Sept. 29 at 6:30 p.m. They will discuss the book “I Was Here” by Gayle Forman. There will also be time to discuss any of your favorite books/music/movies/TV shows, so feel free to attend even if you haven’t read the chosen book. Snacks will be provided. The book club is for those grades 7-12.

Gamblers Anonymous

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings will begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1 1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend. Recruitment and team registration taking place

The Alzheimer’s Association Greater East Ohio Area Chapter is inviting Mahoning and Columbiana County area residents to form teams and register to participate in the Mahoning Valley Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Oct. 10 at the Watson Tressel Training Site at Youngstown State University, located at 651 Elm Street in Youngstown. The Walk is the nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer care, support, education and research. Check in is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. and opening ceremonies will begin at 9:30 a.m. The Walk to End Alzheimer’s takes place annually in more than 700 communities. The event is an inspiring and meaningful experience that calls on participants of all ages to share their collective voice as an advocate, walk in honor of their loved ones and help raise awareness of programs and services available to families affected by Alzheimer’s disease. In addition, there will be refreshments, basket drawings, a children’s corner and entertainment, as well as other activities.

Family fun Fridays

Each Friday until Oct. 16 between the hours of 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., take part in fun drop-in activities in the Family Garden at Fellows Riverside Gardens.
