Middle school football earns 34-0 victory
The Canfield Village Middle School seventh-grade football team traveled to Boardman on Sept. 16 and came away with a 34-0 victory over Boardman Glenwood Middle School.
Canfield’s defense came up big on Boardman’s first possession when Michael Minnenok sacked the Boardman signal caller deep in Spartan territory to force a punt. Canfield took possession at the home team’s 42-yard line and quickly moved down field on a 23-yard jaunt by tailback Logan Torok and Ethan Fletcher to Dominic Magliocca pass down to the Spartan 1. Fletcher bulled in from there for a 6-0 Canfield lead. Canfield put together a 10 play 48-yard drive on their next possession capped off by a 3-yard touchdown run by Fletcher who then connected with Alex Schneider in the left corner of the end zone for the two point conversion and a 14-0 halftime lead.
Canfield took the opening kickoff of the second half and moved 65-yards in eight plays with fullback Colin Hritz rumbling the final 15-yards to paydirt. Fletcher found tight end Minnenok in the end zone for the conversion to make 20-0. Canfield struck quickly following Torok’s strip and recovery of a Spartan ball carrier. Fletcher found Tony Pannunzio racing down the right sideline for a 42-yard touchdown pass and 28-0 Cardinal advantage. Drew Weems got the ball back once more when he fell on a Spartan fumble at the Canfield 44. Two plays later Chase Lowry sprinted 53-yards for the six-pointer and the final margin. The Cardinals piled up 205-yards on the ground while Fletcher was four of five through the air for 64-yards. Offensively Anthony Orr, Hunter McCombs, Gianni Gaetano and Nick Hewko were cited for their stellar play. while the defense was led by Minnenok who had three sacks.
