Ceremony to honor Gold Star mothers set Sunday in Newton Falls


NEWTON FALLS — A ceremony honoring Gold Star mothers is at 1 p.m. Sunday, Gold Star Mother’s Day, at the gazebo in Newton Falls Veterans Park, at the corner of Ridge Road and Broad Street (state Route 534).

Gold Star mothers are mothers who have lost a child in war.

The ceremony was organized by Alexander Kish of Newton Falls. Kish is a Korean War veteran and a member of the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame.

On Nov. 2, 1959, the entire length of state Route 82 was designated Gold Star Mother Memorial Highway. Route 82 runs through Lorain, Cuyahoga, Summit, Portage and Trumbull counties.

On April 6, 2009, intersections of state Routes 45 and 82, and U.S. Route 422 and Route 82 were designated Sgt. Robert M. Carr Memorial Interchange and Sgt. Marco Miller Memorial Interchange, respectively.
