Arraigned via video hookup Wednesday from the Mahoning County jail in the death of a 16-year-old last week, Sir Wolfgang Green appeared with his head shorn of his thick, curly hair.

The fact that he changed his appearance was one of the reasons why Magistrate Anthony Sertick set his bond at $1.2 million on charges of murder, tampering with evidence and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Other factors, Sertick said, were the fact it took police almost a week to find him, he fled the scene of the shooting he is charged with, and he tried to escape police by jumping out a third floor window when they found him late Monday.

“That sounds like a classic flight risk to me,” Sertick said.

Green, 21, is charged in the death of Devon Bailey, 16, who died at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital after being shot in the chest about 8:35 p.m. Sept. 23 at a 559 Cohasset Drive home.

Green was arrested about 11:15 p.m. Monday in a home in the 1900 block of Summer Street. Reports said Green and his brother, DeLord Green, 20, jumped out a third-floor window onto the roof of a front porch and ran away. Both were captured. DeLord Green was not charged.

Police have released few details about Bailey’s death, but Assistant City Prosecutor Jeffrey Moliterno told Sertick that Green fled the shooting scene before police arrived and took the gun used to kill Bailey with him.

Moliterno asked for a significant bond, saying that police are alleging that Green used a gun he is not permitted to have because of a previous conviction to shoot Bailey, and also that he tried to run when police found him.

“Not only is this a very serious crime but I believe he is a significant flight risk,” Moliterno said.

When asked by the magistrate, Green said he does not work and his mother supports him. He was given a court appointed attorney by the magistrate.
