YOUNGSTOWN

Reports said a man arrested on charges of child endangering Monday afternoon after one of his children fell from a second-floor window was asleep for 18 hours after drinking an entire bottle of vodka the night before.

Thomas Quimby, 28, of Parkview Avenue, is in the Mahoning County jail on a third-degree felony count of child endangering as well as a misdemeanor count and is expected to be arraigned today in municipal court.

Police were called to his South Side home in the 900 block of Parkview about 3:30 p.m. Monday on a report of a child that had fallen out of a second-floor window. When they got there, they found a neighbor holding a small girl who had cuts on her hand and leg.

The neighbor told police she was sitting on her porch when she heard a child crying and went over to look and found the child on the ground.

From outside, police could see another child at the upstairs window. When they tried to get inside, however, there were three large dogs that kept them at bay, reports said. The Mahoning County Dog Warden was called along with the fire department so a ladder could be used to get to the second-story window.

Reports said Detective Sgt. Brent Gaitanis climbed a ladder after the fire department arrived and found the father, who reports said is Quimby, lying on a bed in the room sound asleep. Gaitanis was able to awaken Quimby. Quimby told police he never heard anything.

Reports said Quimby told police he drank a bottle of vodka Sunday evening and fell asleep about 9 p.m. Neighbors told police the mother of the children was at work on the first day of a new job.

Reports said Quimby told police he always locks the bedroom door when he falls asleep so the children do not roam around, but he also told officers one of his daughters likes to open the window in that room. Quimby also smelled like alcohol and his eyes were bloodshot, reports said.

The child who fell was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, where she was listed in stable condition Tuesday. The other child was turned over to the Mahoning County Children Services Board.

Local court records show no previous charges for Quimby.
