E. coli tests at Mill Creek Park's Lake Newport show little change

YOUNGSTOWN — The Mahoning County District Board of Health today released the results from the from the ninth week of sampling at Lake Newport, which showed little change in E. coli bacteria levels.

The samples were drawn on Monday in order to capture data within 24-48 hours after a significant rain. These samples included the initial locations as well as the additional areas that were tested in week eight.

E. coli counts from samples collected Monday, for the most part, were below 576, which is the threshold the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency considers to represent a potential public health risk.

“The additional samples will continue to be collected until the end of October 2015 in an effort to establish a baseline for Lake Newport and in an attempt to isolate an area that may have contributed to the elevated E.coli levels in previous testing.” said Ryan Tekac, the health board's director of environmental health.
