Mayoral candidate faces assault charge

Nick Phillips, 51, a campbell mayoral candidate is facing charges of felonious assault. A 22-year-old man told police that Phillips punched him in the face and broke his jaw during an Aug. 5 fight outside Phillips’ Sycamore Drive home, according to a police report.
The accuser is Phillips’ wife’s daughter’s boyfriend.
Phillips told police he struck the man in self-defense when the man had attempted to push Phillips’ wife, a police report states. He will be arraigned at 9 a.m. today in Campbell Municipal Court.
Open house planned

The Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center, Veterans Benefits Administration’s Cleveland Regional Office and the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery are hosting an open house and Veteran Listening Session for veterans, family members and the public from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Youngstown VA Outpatient Clinic, 2031 Belmont Ave.
Staff from all offices will be on hand to assist veterans with specific issues or concerns and to provide information about eligibility, compensation and pension, volunteer opportunities, Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom (OEF/OIF), and the Veterans Choice program among others.
A limited number of Veterans Benefits Administration appointments will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis beginning at 5 p.m.
Cut with a machete
WARREN
A man, 43, was cut in the back of the head with a machete at 1:04 a.m. Saturday at his house in the 1500 block of North Park Avenue. He received treatment by ambulance personnel and refused to be taken to the hospital.
The man said he and his roommate got into an argument after his roommate accused him of eating his food.
The roommate got a machete from upstairs and swung it at him, hitting him and causing a small cut, police said. The roommate then fled, the victim said. Police did not locate the roommate.
Man is shot at home
WARREN
A man, 23, of First Street Southwest, was treated at ValleyCare Trumbull Memorial Hospital after being shot at his home at 9:25 a.m. Saturday.
A Warren police detective was called to the scene. The victim was taken by private vehicle to the hospital by a person who found him outside of the house near a large amount of blood. Information on the man’s condition was not available Monday.
Teen boys hit by BBs
WARREN
Boys 17 and 15, both of Warren, refused medical treatment after being hit with BBs or pellets fired at them while they were hiding in a garbage receptacle near the Trumbull Community Action Program offices on Palmyra Road Southwest on Saturday.
The boys said they were walking along Palmyra at 10:30 p.m. when someone in a green Dodge Neon traveling on Palmyra fired several shots.
They ran toward the TCAP building and hid in the receptacle, but one of the four males in the Neon opened the door to the receptacle and fired inside, hitting the older boy in the finger and hitting the younger boy in the shoulder and leg.
Man found dead
WARREN
A man, 29, was found dead in the basement of his home on Lexington Avenue Northwest at 5 p.m. Saturday. The man’s father directed an officer to the basement, where the male was found hunched on his knees with his head touching the ground.
His face was dark blue, and it appeared he had been there “numerous hours.” Police found a piece of folded wax paper with a brown substance inside thought to be heroin near the body. Police also found what appeared to be a used metal crack pipe, they said.
Hubbard boil advisory
HUBBARD
Repairs to the pump station on Creed Avenue will result in water service being interrupted for residents south of the pump station from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday. After the service interruption, a precautionary boil alert will be in effect for at least 24 hours. During that time, residents are advised to boil water before drinking it or using it for cooking or washing cooking utensils. The city will lift the alert pending laboratory results.
Arrested after tot’s fall
YOUNGSTOWN
Police arrested a Youngstown man after his 1-year- old daughter fell from a second-story window of a Parkview Avenue home. Thomas Quimby, Jr., 28, is charged with child endangering. Police said the child was in stable condition at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital late Monday.
