Lamar A. Mitchell, of various addresses in Warren, Niles and Youngstown, was sentenced to four years in prison Monday in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court after pleading guilty to aggravated arson and burglary.
Mitchell, 32, set fire to his girlfriend’s house on Arthur Drive Northwest in March, about 90 minutes after she went to the Warren Police Department to report that he had assaulted her, police said.
Police were interviewing the woman about her assault allegations when Mitchell called her on her cellphone, according to a police report. The officer listened on speaker phone as Mitchell threatened to set fire to the woman’s home, the report said.
The woman, 21, was not at home when the fire started at 5:41 a.m. A neighbor called 911 to report the fire, which caused $25,000 in damage. A warrant for Mitchell’s arrest was issued shortly after the fire.
The woman said Mitchell tried to set the gas tank of her car on fire earlier that morning, just before she drove to the police station, the report said.
She also alleged that Mitchell had stolen her cellphone, hit her in the eye, choked her, pulled her hair and threw her to the ground when she took the phone back, police said.
