Arraigned in assault

YOUNGSTOWN

A McCartney Road man is in the Mahoning County jail on $5,000 bond after being arraigned on an assault charge in municipal court Monday involving slamming a child on his head because police said the child was celebrating a good basketball shot.

Jaquan Rutledge, 20, pleaded not guilty to the charge before Judge Robert Milich. He was arrested on a warrant in the Aug. 14 incident in the 200 block of Beachwood Court.

A woman there told police a child she was caring for about 13 years old was playing basketball in the street and hit a shot and started celebrating when Rutledge, who was nearby, was upset the boy was making noise and chased him and slammed him to the ground.

Reports said Rutledge told the woman he was celebrating with the victim, but the victim and his brother told police Rutledge often picks on them.

Grants will fund 4 officers in area

CLEVELAND

Three-year federal Community Oriented Policing Services grants will fund two Boardman police officer positions and one officer each in Austintown and Milton townships. The grants are $125,000 per officer.

The awards to those township police departments are among grants to 11 police agencies in northern Ohio, aimed at creating, and in some cases protecting, 43 law enforcement positions, the U.S. attorney said.

“This money will result in more officers on patrol in the Mahoning Valley, getting guns and drugs off the street while strengthening our community,” said Steven M. Dettelbach, U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio.
