Several major roads in Warren to be repaved coming years
Staff report
WARREN
Several of the city’s most-traveled roads will be improved with nearly $5 million in federal and local funds in the next few years.
The most significant is the $2.3 million resurfacing and upgrading of 3.5 miles of Elm Road from South Street to the state Route 5/82 Bypass. It’s scheduled for next summer.
Of the total, the federal government is paying $1.84 million – 80 percent – and the city is asking the Ohio Public Works Commission for a grant to cover the other 20 percent.
The project includes improvements to curb ramps to meet Americans with Disabilities Act standards and to improve the concrete.
A $1.1 million project will resurface Tod Avenue from Market Street to Elm Hill Drive Northwest near Burbank Park in the summer 2017 or 2018, said a representative of the the Warren Engineering Department.
Atlantic Street from Mahoning Avenue Northwest to Elm Road Northeast also is included in the project. The federal government will pay 80 percent of the cost.
Laird and Woodland avenues and Genessee Street are scheduled for resurfacing in summer 2018 or 2019 in a project that will cost about $1.5 million, with 80 percent of that coming from the federal government.
Laird will be resurfaced from Youngstown Road to Atlantic Street. Genessee will be resurfaced from Market Street to Elm Road. And Woodland will be resurfaced from Elm Road to Perkinswood Boulevard.
The city is responsible for maintenance on a small portion of Route 5/82 Bypass just north of East Market Street.
Warren City Council approved legislation last week that gives the Ohio Department of Transportation permission to resurface that part of the roadway at no cost to the city.
