‘Maze Runner’ sequel outpaces ‘Black Mass’

“The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials” edged out Johnny Depp’s “Black Mass” at the box office, as the two films split young and old moviegoers in half on the first weekend of the fall movie season.

20th Century Fox’s sequel to “The Maze Runner” earned an estimated $30.3 million, according to studio estimates Sunday. Warner Bros.’ “Black Mass,” starring Johnny Depp as Boston gangster Whitey Bulger, premiered with $23.4 million.

Rounding out the top five were: “The Visit,” $11.3 million, third place; “The Perfect Guy,” $9.7 million, fourth place; and “Everest,” $7.6 million, fifth place.

Williams of ‘Girls’ weds husband on ranch

NEW YORK

Actress Allison Williams and CollegeHumor co-founder Ricky Van Veen were wed at a private Wyoming ranch ceremony.

The couple exchanged nuptials Saturday, a representative for the actress confirmed Sunday. The “Girls” star and daughter of NBC’s Brian Williams posted a picture on Instagram of herself and Van Veen from the wedding. She noted that her gown was by Oscar de la Renta.

Williams, 27, and Van Veen, 34, were engaged in February 2014.

‘Room’ wins audience award at Toronto event

NEW YORK

The top award of the 40th Toronto International Film Festival on Sunday went to Lenny Abrahamson’s “Room,” an emotional tale of a captive mother and her 5-year-old son.

The film took the festival’s People’s Choice award, determined by audience voting. Starring Brie Larson and 8-year-old Jacob Tremblay, “Room” is adapted from Emma Donoghue’s 2010 novel. It’s told from the perspective of a boy who has been locked in a room with his mother for his entire life.

Past winners include “12 Years a Slave” and “The King’s Speech.”

“Room” will be released Oct. 16.
