Getting an earful: Youngstown State backup quarterback Ricky Davis got his first extended action of the season and scored the first touchdown of his career, a 4-yard run late in the third quarter that made it 48-0. Problem was, he somersaulted into the end zone, earning a 15-yard penalty and an earful from YSU coach Bo Pelini. “That’s a no-no,” Pelini said. “That didn’t thrill me at all. We had a little ‘come-to-Jesus’ after that. He’s not a bad kid. He’s kind of like that, but you’ve got to learn from it. He apologized and I apologized to their coach. That isn’t what we represent. We’re not trying to rub it in anybody’s face. You win, you win with class and you do things the right way and Ricky understands that. Trust me.”
Onside oops: The Penguins’ kickers had a solid day in rainy conditions, with one exception. Kickoff specialist Nick Sheely (Austintown Fitch) tried a squib kick following Davis’ touchdown, but hit a Saint Francis player and YSU’s Cole Kochman recovered the ball. “We weren’t trying to onside kick it,” Pelini said. “We’ve got to work on our squibs because it hit their middle guy. I felt bad about that. I wasn’t trying to rub anything in.” Sheely had just one punt on Saturday, a 49-yarder that hit near the SFU 6 and bounced out of bounds. Zak Kennedy (Cardinal Mooney) made two 22-yard field goals after going 0-for-2 on field goals last week. “It was a good day for our kickers,” Pelini said.
All wet: For the second straight week, YSU played most of the game in rainy conditions, including a near-monsoon in the second quarter. Unlike last week, it didn’t seem to bother the Penguins. “The wind was kind of swirling,” Pelini said. “For the most part, I thought we handled the rain pretty good. We took care of the football.” Neither team threw an interception and both teams fumbled twice, losing one each. When asked if he likes playing in the rain, tight end Shane Kuhn laughed and said, “I don’t prefer it, but we’re getting used to it.”
This and that: Linebackers Jaylin Kelly and Jamar Pinnock led the Penguins with six tackles each. Pinnock also had two tackles for loss. ... YSU scored on its first eight possessions. ... The Penguins improved to 7-0 all-time against Saint Francis. ... YSU RB Martin Ruiz moved into eighth place on the school’s all-time rushing list with 2,639 yards. Tamron Smith (1990-93) is first with 4,866 yards.
