Volunteers pull trash from NW Ohio waterways on cleanup day

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — Hundreds of volunteers in northwest Ohio are pitching in to clean up trash and debris from Toledo-area rivers and streams.

Organizers with the nonprofit group Partners for Clean Streams say more than 1,000 people registered to help Saturday with the 19th annual cleanup.

Organizers say the 60 sites targeted for cleanup are along five waterways in the area. Volunteers were expected to visit sites along the Ottawa River, Swan Creek, and Maumee River watersheds, the Maumee River and Maumee Bay and its tributaries.

The nonprofit group says volunteers last year removed nearly 17,000 pounds of garbage sites on local rivers, ensuring that it didn’t end up in nearby Lake Erie.
