Cafe opening Oct. 12 at Newport library

Cafe Augustine, located in the Newport Public Library, 3730 Market St. is having its grand opening at 10 a.m. Oct. 12.

The cafe is a four-month personal growth and work-readiness program operated independently of the library.

The food service establishment aims to equip adults, ages 18 through 24, with tools necessary to change their lives, in part by operating the cafe.

The Rev. Edward Brienz of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Youngstown is the cafe’s executive director.

The cafe is working with and modeled after Cafe Reconcile, a cafe that opened in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina.

Extend garden season

YOUNGSTOWN

Mill Creek MetroParks will host an evening with Emmy Award-winning producer, television host and writer Doug Oster at 7 p.m. Thursday at Fellows Riverside Gardens, 123 McKinley Ave.

Oster will share techniques on how to extend your garden season. He will discuss cool-weather crops, plant protection, harvesting and more.

The event is free and open to the public. Registration is requested but not required.

Bike-safety event

LOWELLVILLE

Lowellville police and fire departments are teaming up with Struthers Cub Scout Pack 101 for a bike-safety event from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at city hall, 140 E. Liberty St. Participants will pass out free bike helmets, host a fire-safety station and facilitate the creation of emergency-contact lists and child-identification kits. The police department received the bike helmets through a grant from the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Shot in face

WARREN

A Warren man was found shot in the face Saturday morning, according to Vindicator broadcast partner 21 WFMJ-TV. Shots were heard in the 200 block of 1st Street in Warren at about 9 a.m. Police said the man may be in his early 20s and was discovered lying in a front yard of a home. Warren police questioned neighbors and a witness inside the home. The man was taken by helicopter to a Cleveland hospital where his condition remained unknown Saturday night.

Cookies, crafts

MERCER, PA.

Munnell Run Farm and the Mercer County Conservation District will host an autumn cookies and crafts event from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 28 at the Farm, 753 Greenville Road.

Deanna Yarnell, owner of QT Cakes in Sandy Lake, will teach basic baking and decorating tips. Each guest will bake a half-dozen fall leaf sugar cookies with salted caramel icing. The recipe will be provided to take home. Yarnell also will teach guests to make unique fall table decor. District staff will also teach guests to decorate an autumn pumpkin with leaf accents.

I-80 bridge repairs

MERCER, PA.

Repair work is scheduled to begin Monday on a damaged bridge that carries Interstate 80 over Route 718 in Shenango Township, Mercer County. The bridge was damaged when it was struck by a truck traveling south on Route 718 Aug. 11. Mekis Construction Corp. of Fennelton will make the repairs, which include replacement of damaged beams along with reconstruction of portions of the concrete bridge deck and a bituminous overlay, along with updated pavement markings.

The underpass is on I-80, about four miles east of the Ohio line. The section of Route 718 impacted is between Wheatland Road (Route 3003) and Wansack Road (Route 3015) in Shenango Township.

Work is expected to be completed in early November. The $372,196 project cost is to be paid entirely with state funds.
