Knitting guild to meet

The Western Reserve Knitting Guild will host a special knit-in program on Oct. 3 at 10:30 a.m. at the Austintown library, located at at 600 S. Raccoon Road. Pat Jones will instruct members on making Boo Boo Bears, a child friendly soother. Members are to bring various sizes of knitting needles and assorted yarns. Also members are encouraged to bring a finger food snack to share. The library is not sponsoring or participating in this event. Learn to decipher labels at St. E’s Boardman

Learn to read and decipher food labels, and how information on labels relates to health during a Healthy Eating for You: Label Reading presentation at 12:30 p.m. on Sept. 22 in the Willow Room at St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital, located at 8401 Market Street. Registered dietitian and community educator Bridget Lackey will lead an informational discussion and answer questions. The presentation is free and open to the public. Reservations are appreciated. Newcomers to have first meeting in September

Newcomers of Mahoning Valley is welcoming back new and old members at its first meeting on Sept. 23 at Piccadilly Parlour in Canfield. They will be gathering at 11:30 a.m. with a luncheon being served at 12 p.m. If you have had some changes in your life and would like to meet other women in the community, join them at this next meeting. They have birthday celebrations, discuss books, go to lunch and a movie, and celebrate with others, be they husbands, significant others or just themselves with dinners at various restaurants in the area. Class of 1956 to have reunion

The Chaney High School Class of 1956 has planned a luncheon reunion for Oct. 9 at 11:30 a.m. at the Belleria Pizza and Italian Restaurant located on South Meridian Road. Historical program to feature early settlers

The Poland Historical Society is sponsoring a “Dressed for the Day” program on Oct. 3 at the historic Poland Presbyterian Church from 1-3 p.m. Presenters will provide a narrated demonstration about the cultural history, clothing and daily life of the early settlers of this area, followed by a tea. The cost is $20 and proceeds will support preservation and education. Call 330-536-6877 to make a reservation by Sept. 26. Seating is limited.

Cruiser Classic 5K – inaugural custom car run/walk seeking participants

The inaugural Cruiser Classic 5k Run Walk will take place at the Free Methodist Church in New Middletown in conjunction with the Custom Car Show. The run/walk takes place on Sept. 26. Registration opens at 7:30 a.m. and the race starts at 9 a.m. at the Free Methodist Church, located at 9900 Youngstown-Pittsburg Road in New Middletown. This 3.1 mile race travels along the back roads in a safe and secure location.

It’s a trip through a true custom car experience along with custom cars at every turn. The event is being officially timed and mapped by Boardman Second Sole. All proceeds will benefit the STCCC, Springfield Townships Local Food Bank. The start and finish will be at Springfield Township Custom Car Show at the Free Methodist Church.

There are seven age groups from the youngest to the oldest with medals being presented to the top three males and females in each age group and the top three runners overall. Shirts are guaranteed for the first 100 registered. Pre-registration is $15 and race day registration is $20.

Dressed for the day

Members of the Poland Historical Society have planned an exciting afternoon featuring historical authors Mary K. Inman and Louise Pence. Inman and Pence are experts on clothing and everyday life in the late 18th century and early 19th century, and they have co-authored two illustrated paper doll history books. They will provide a narrated demonstration about the clothing, cultural history and daily life of early settlers to Town One, Range One of the Connecticut Western Reserve which is currently known as Poland. Following their presentation, Poland Historical Society members will host an afternoon tea. The event will take place on Oct. 3 at Poland Presbyterian Church from 1-3 p.m. The cost is $20 per person. Relay for Life benefit sale

A two-day benefit sale will take place on Sept. 25 and 26 at 28 Island Drive in Poland. Hours are 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. both days. Several baskets will be raffled off, containing gifts cards, cash or fun holiday crafts and decorations. This benefit will also include a bake sale and trash and treasure items. Start your holiday shopping early and support a great cause. All proceeds will be donated to the American Cancer Society and the Poland Relay for Life.

Spaghetti dinner for Canizaro-Maloney

Friends and family of Nancy Canizaro-Maloney, a Poland resident suffering from a brain tumor, are planning a spaghetti dinner and Chinese auction fundraiser from 1-6 p.m. Sept. 27 at the Ursuline High School cafeteria. Chinese auction items can be coordinated with Kim DeSantis at 330-502-4697. The event aims to offset medical bills Canizaro-Maloney and her family have incurred over her battle with a tumor that has been releasing chemical meningitis into her brain.

Bingo and card party for SMA cure

On Sept. 20, the Austintown Eagles #3298 Ladies Auxiliary is hosting a Bingo and Card Party at 1655 S. Raccoon Road in Austintown. Admission is $5 and includes a luncheon and a chance to win the door prize and bingo cards are $1 each. Proceeds from this benefit go to Spinal Muscular Atrophy, the number one genetic cause of infant deaths. SMA is a disease that robs people of physical strength by affecting the motor nerve cells in the spinal cord, taking away the ability to walk, eat or breathe.

Butterfly information session on Sept. 22

Audubon Society/Mahoning Valley invites the public to learn about monarch butterflies. Monarch populations are decreasing due to habitat loss. You can help save the monarch butterfly by providing suitable habitat in your own yard. A luncheon will be served for $20 consisting of swiss chicken, roast pork, stuffed shells, sandtrap potatoes, California vegetable medley and cherries in the snow for dessert, along with beverages and rolls and butter. The guest speakers will be Mr. and Mrs. Jim Sutman, owners of Gallagher’s Lunch Bucket in the Oak Hill Renaissance Building, The Purple Cat and Golden String Radio. YPD hosts T-shirt sale

The Youngstown Police Department is beginning its 2015 Breast Cancer T-shirt sale. New this year are children’s sizes, including youth small, youth medium and youth large at $10 each. Henry P. Nemez Sr. Memorial Golf Outing

The Poland Rotary will be hosting the Henry P. Nemenz, Sr. Memorial Golf Outing on Sept. 19. Nemez was a charter member of the Poland Rotary Club and a leader in the community. The event proceeds will go to the Chili Open which supports local charities. This Memorial Golf Outing is a four person scramble and the cost is $70 per person. This includes: 18 holes of golf and a cart, lunch, dinner, beverages and door prizes. There will also be a 50/50 raffle, skins, hole prizes, a hole in one prize and a putting contest. The event begins at 2 p.m. with a shotgun start. The Henry P. Nemenz, Sr. Memorial Golf Outing will take place at the Bedford Trails Golf course at 713 Bedford Road in Coitsville. This program is for children ages 2 and 3 and their caregivers at the Poland library at 10:30 a.m. every Thursday in September. Join the library for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child become a successful reader.

Join the Poland library for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult. This event will take place every Thursday in September at 1 p,m,

Gotta Move story time

This program is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a caregiver. The Poland library will host Gotta Move story time at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 28. Join them for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, and talk and play.

Lego my library

Children ages 6 and up can enjoy creating Lego designs at the Poland library at 6 p.m. on Sept. 22. Legos will be provided.

Trim a tree for September

Children of all ages can stop by the Poland library during regular hours in September to decorate an ornament for their all-seasons tree.

Banned books hunt

Do you know any banned books? Find the covers of banned books hidden in the library, unravel the secret message and be entered in a drawing for one of two prizes. One tween and one teen will win. This hunt will take place at the Poland library during regular library hours from Sept. 1 - Oct. 3. The hunt is for tweens in grades 4-6 and teens grades 7-12.

Read, rap and Snack

Join Poland library’s teen book club for the September meeting, taking place on Sept. 29 at 6:30 p.m. They will discuss the book “I Was Here” by Gayle Forman. There will also be time to discuss any of your favorite books/music/movies/TV shows, so feel free to attend even if you haven’t read the chosen book. Snacks will be provided. The book club is for those grades 7-12.

Gamblers Anonymous

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings will begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1 1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend. Recruitment and team registration taking place

The Alzheimer’s Association Greater East Ohio Area Chapter is inviting Mahoning and Columbiana County area residents to form teams and register to participate in the Mahoning Valley Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Oct. 10 at the Watson Tressel Training Site at Youngstown State University, located at 651 Elm Street in Youngstown. The Walk is the nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer care, support, education and research. Check in is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. and opening ceremonies will begin at 9:30 a.m. The Walk to End Alzheimer’s takes place annually in more than 700 communities. The event is an inspiring and meaningful experience that calls on participants of all ages to share their collective voice as an advocate, walk in honor of their loved ones and help raise awareness of programs and services available to families affected by Alzheimer’s disease. In addition, there will be refreshments, basket drawings, a children’s corner and entertainment, as well as other activities.
