Man with homemade cannon indicted by grand jury

A Mahoning County grand jury indicted a man who police said made a homemade cannon that exploded in Lowellville in July.

Michael Lysowski, 47, of Youngstown-Poland Road, was indicted Thursday on two counts of felonious assault, illegal manufacture or processing of explosives, vehicular vandalism and vandalism.

Lysowski is not yet in custody. He was indicted on a direct presentment.

Lowellville Police Chief Rick Jamorzik said Lysowski was operating a homemade cannon that exploded on the night of July 18 during the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Festival in Lowellville.

The cannon was in a yard in the first block of East Grant Street and it had malfunctioned, leading to the explosion.

Jamorzik said two people were seriously hurt, two cars were destroyed, and two houses also sustained damage.

Helping out in the investigation was the Youngstown Bomb Squad and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Issued a superseding indictment on a charge of failure to stop after an accident was Joseph F. Yurich, 36, of Hunters Hill in Poland, who already faces charges of aggravated vehicular homicide, aggravated vehicular assault and operating a watercraft while impaired in a May 9 crash.

The accident involved two boats on Berlin Reservoir that killed one man and injured another.

The charge of aggravated vehicular homicide, a second-degree felony, pertains to the death of Neal B. Cuppett, 58, of Akron; and the charge of aggravated vehicular assault, a third-degree felony, pertains to injuries to Cuppett’s fishing buddy, Bruce Lindamood, 42, of Green. Yurich also is accused of not stopping after the crash.

Yurich was indicted Sept. 3 and entered a written plea of not guilty at his arraignment Tuesday.
