ALLIANCES

Ohio Cultural Alliance will have a 6 p.m. Oct. 5 dinner meeting at the Georgetown Banquet Center, 5946 South Ave., Boardman. Dr. Y.T. Chiu will discuss “Going Places with the Ohio Cultural Alliance: Tibet.” Dr. Chiu was born in Hong Kong, moved to China during World War II, then to Taiwan. He emigrated to the Youngstown area in 1962. Cultural enrichment will be provided by Dr. Joseph Kromholtz on the violin. Cost is $15 for members and $20 for nonmembers. CLASSES

CLUBS

Friends of the Mahoning River will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Oak Hill Collaborative, 507 Oak Hill, Youngstown. Parking is in the rear of the building. The group will discuss status reports on submissions for two grants, one to win a printer from ComDoc and another for the purchase of water quality testing equipment from the Western Reserve Land Conservancy. GUILDS

Embroiderers Guild of America, Youngstown Chapter, will meet Tuesday at the IOOF Hall, 111 S. Broad St., Canfield. Friends of the Austintown Library will gather at 10 a.m. Sept. 28 in the community room of the library, 600 S. Raccoon Road. Jim Sutman, director of Iron and String Life Enhancement Inc. the parent company of The Purple Cat, will be the speaker. Sutman’s organization is dedicated to enhancing the lives of the disabled through activities such as holiday parties, local sporting events, dances, weekend trips, camping and Corner in Girard.

Mahoning County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society will gather at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the ministry building at St. Charles Church, 7325 Westview Drive, Boardman. Sean Posey, a genealogist historian, will present a program discussing local history and areas of interest near Youngstown State University and other outlying communities. SUPPORT GROUPS

Alzheimer Network Family Support Group will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Emmanuel Lutheran Education Building, 251 S. Broadway Ave., Salem. The meetings are open to family members and caregivers of persons afflicted with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia. For information call 330-788-9755.

Alzheimer’s Association Caregiver Support Group meetings follow: 2 p.m. Monday, Antonine Sister’s Adult Day Care Center, 2675 N. Lipkey Road, North Jackson; and 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Canfield United Methodist Church, 27 S. Broad St., Canfield. The meetings are free to all caregivers, family members and friends with a loved one living with Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia. VFW Post 6488 Ladies Auxiliary will meet at 4 p.m. Sunday at the post home, 2065 Coitsville-Hubbard Road. Sandra Graves will preside, and Cheryl Eaton, 8th district president, will inspect the auxiliary. Dues are now payable. The auxiliary and Love and Loyal Expression group will participate in cancer awareness during the month of October. A social hour will follow. All members are encouraged to attend.
