Learn to decipher labels at St. E’s Boardman

Learn to read and decipher food labels, and how information on labels relates to health during a Healthy Eating for You: Label Reading presentation at 12:30 p.m. on Sept. 22 in the Willow Room at St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital, located at 8401 Market Street. Registered dietitian and community educator Bridget Lackey will lead an informational discussion and answer questions. The presentation is free and open to the public. Reservations are appreciated. Newcomers to have first meeting in September

Newcomers of Mahoning Valley is welcoming back new and old members at its first meeting on Sept. 23 at Piccadilly Parlour in Canfield. They will be gathering at 11:30 a.m. with a luncheon being served at 12 p.m. If you have had some changes in your life and would like to meet other women in the community, join them at this next meeting. They have birthday celebrations, discuss books, go to lunch and a movie, and celebrate with others, be they husbands, significant others or just themselves with dinners at various restaurants in the area. They are always willing to try new things, hear about the community and usually have different speakers at each monthly meeting. For members or those interested in joining, bring dues of $20. Class of 1956 to have reunion

The Chaney High School Class of 1956 has planned a luncheon reunion for Oct. 9 at 11:30 a.m. at the Belleria Pizza and Italian Restaurant located on South Meridian Road. Helping Hands to have surprise sale

Helping Hands Closet at Western Reserve United Methodist Church, located at 4580 Canfield Road in Canfield, carries new and gently used clothes for the entire family. A surprise sale will take place soon, just pull a ticket in store to receive your percentage off you purchase. Helping Hands is open each Tuesday from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. and there are currently new fall items available for purchase.

Chicken dinner to be Oct. 1

Western Reserve United Methodist Church, located at 4580 Canfield Road in Canfield, is having the drive through chicken dinner on Oct. 1 from 4 p.m. until it is sold out. The cost is $8 and the menu includes stuffed chicken breast, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans and a brownie.

Spaghetti dinner cancelled

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the spaghetti dinner for Tyler Wilby on Sept. 26 has been cancelled.

Gathering Place event to be on Oct. 12

There will be a gathering place event at Lord of Life Church, located at 550 N. Broad Street in Canfield, on Oct. 12 at 11 a.m. The program will be “Pre-needs and Funeral Planning,” provided by Fox Funeral Home. Lunch will be provided by the Woodlands. This is a free community outreach social program that takes place on the second Monday of every month. Different games and activities are offered each month. Bingo and card party for SMA cure

On Sept. 20, the Austintown Eagles #3298 Ladies Auxiliary is hosting a Bingo and Card Party at 1655 S. Raccoon Road in Austintown. Admission is $5 and includes a luncheon and a chance to win the door prize and bingo cards are $1 each. Proceeds from this benefit go to Spinal Muscular Atrophy, the number one genetic cause of infant deaths. SMA is a disease that robs people of physical strength by affecting the motor nerve cells in the spinal cord, taking away the ability to walk, eat or breathe.

Butterfly information session on Sept. 22

Audubon Society/Mahoning Valley invites the public to learn about monarch butterflies. Monarch populations are decreasing due to habitat loss. You can help save the monarch butterfly by providing suitable habitat in your own yard. Informational meeting for Punta Cana Destination Adventure

American Business Women’s Association to meet Sept. 20

The Network Council of the American Business Women’s Association will sponsor its annual ABW Day on Sept. 20 at A La Cart Catering in Canfield beginning at noon. A luncheon will be served for $20 consisting of swiss chicken, roast pork, stuffed shells, sandtrap potatoes, California vegetable medley and cherries in the snow for dessert, along with beverages and rolls and butter. The guest speakers will be Mr. and Mrs. Jim Sutman, owners of Gallagher’s Lunch Bucket in the Oak Hill Renaissance Building, The Purple Cat and Golden String Radio. YPD hosts T-shirt sale

The Youngstown Police Department is beginning its 2015 Breast Cancer T-shirt sale. New this year are children’s sizes, including youth small, youth medium and youth large at $10 each. This program is for children ages 2 and 3 and their caregivers at MetroParks Farm at 10 a.m. every Wednesday in September. Join the library for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child become a successful reader.

Fun time for 4s & 5s

Join MetroParks Farm for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult. This event will take place Sept. 29 at 10 a.m.

Gotta move story time

This program is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a caregiver. MetroParks Farm will host Gotta Move Story Time at 10 a.m. on Sept. 22. Join them for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, and talk and play.

Newcomers Club to meet

The Newcomers Club of Canfield has announced the officers for the 2015-2016 year: President - Betty Popa-Schuld, First Vice President - Sara Dysert, Second Vice President - Karen Morvay, Secretary - Rose Bissett, Treasurer - Julie VanDevender, Publicity - Sherrie Jacobs and Basket Raffle Chair - Diane Durrant. Upcoming meetings will include a September potluck, October Witches Wine Fest. and a November Holiday Decorating Ideas. The purpose of the Newcomers Club of Canfield is to provide an opportunity for members of the community in and around Canfield to develop friendships, welcome newcomers and to help support the civic, social and charitable life of the community. It is further formed to engage in recreational and social activities in support of these purposes. The meetings are take place on the second Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. unless otherwise announced. The Newcomers Club of Canfield is open to all women of the Mahoning Valley.

Service changes at Lord of Life

Going forward, there will be a change in Sunday worship service at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, located at 550 N. Broad Street in Canfield. Worship with Holy Communion service will start at 10:15 a.m. as of Sept. 13. Child care will continue to be provided at 10:15 a.m. Sunday school for preschool through grade 6 will take place for half an hour, beginning at 9:30 a.m. and ending at 10 a.m. On Sept. 13, the church will celebrate Rally Day, beginning at 9:30 a.m. for all ages. Rally Day is a celebration of Bible and faith exploration opportunities for all ages. Saturday worship service will remain at 5 p.m.

Prayer at the Gazebo

Due to enthusiastic response, Canfield United Methodist Church invites you to gather each Wednesday at noon at the Gazebo on the Green for a time of public prayer. This gathering is open to the public and will include a short reading from the Psalms and the lifting of prayer concerns for the community, the country and the world, as well as personal joys and concerns. Gamblers Anonymous

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings will begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1 1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend. Recruitment and team registration taking place

The Alzheimer’s Association Greater East Ohio Area Chapter is inviting Mahoning and Columbiana County area residents to form teams and register to participate in the Mahoning Valley Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Oct. 10 at the Watson Tressel Training Site at Youngstown State University, located at 651 Elm Street in Youngstown. The Walk is the nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer care, support, education and research. Check in is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. and opening ceremonies will begin at 9:30 a.m. The Walk to End Alzheimer’s takes place annually in more than 700 communities. The event is an inspiring and meaningful experience that calls on participants of all ages to share their collective voice as an advocate, walk in honor of their loved ones and help raise awareness of programs and services available to families affected by Alzheimer’s disease. In addition, there will be refreshments, basket drawings, a children’s corner and entertainment, as well as other activities.

Boardman Park hosts free concerts

It’s time to pack up your blankets and lawn chairs and head out to Boardman Park’s Maag Outdoor Theatre for some local entertainment at Music in the Park.
