Boardman volleyball beats Howland

The Boardman High School volleyball team defeated Howland by a score of 3-1, with the scores of 25-6, 22-25, 25-21 and 25-14. Krista Johnson led the Spartans with 15 kills, four aces and 17 digs. Hayley Eicher added nine kills and two blocks. Katie Platt had 31 assists, six aces and six kills. Courtney Platt had 16 digs and three aces. The Lady Spartans increase to 3-2 on the season and 1-1 in the conference.

Varsity soccer defeats Lakeside 6-1

Boardman boys varsity soccer beat Lakeside 6-1 in an away game on Sept. 3. Junior Robb Lewis scored twice in a span of three minutes to help open up a tight 2-1 match early in the second half. Senior Chris Dailey, along with sophomores Cameron Burford, Gavin Harris and Sean Buck rounded out the scoring. Seniors Shane Learman, Adam Deeley and Andrew Gable, along with sophomore Jacob Smotzer were credited with assists. Senior Kevin Durkin had toe saves in goal.

Junior varsity cross country places fourth

The Boardman junior varsity cross country team battled 90-degree heat to place fourth at the Girard SL 2. This gives the Spartans a 16-10 record.

Middle school cross country places third

The Glenwood boys cross country team took third place at the Girard meet. The top seven runners were Noah Basista (eighth), Caleb Zubanek (16th), Tommy Fryda (21st), Dom Albanese (23rd), CJ Cordon (28th), Jake Hughes (29th) and Jason Lagese (36th). The Glenwood girls team placed fifth out of nine teams. Top runners were Ayssa DiNapoli (25th), Hannah Davitt (26th) and Abby Yocum (27th).

Center middle wins against Youngstown East and Glenwood

Boardman Center Middle School seventh-grade volleyball team defeated Youngstown East in two games, with the scores of 25-23 and 25-15. Madi Larch led the Spartans in the first game serving eight aces while Lanny Kilpatrick had eight serving points, followed by Kathryn O’Horo and Maura Murphy serving six points each. On Sept. 8, Boardman Center seventh grade team dropped a very competitive match to Boardman Glenwood Middle School with scores of 25-12 and 28-26. Boardman Center Middle School eighth-grade volleyball team defeated Boardman Glenwood Middle School with scores of 23-25, 25-22 and 25-15. Keimanni Boyd led the way with eight serving points, followed by Tyler Boggs serving six points and Marissa Melewski serving five points. Keimanni Boyd had five kills, followed by Abbie Serrino and Abbie Sammartino with three kills each.

Boardman Center beats Struthers

Both the seventh- and eighth-grade volleyball teams won against Struthers in the Aug. 26 match up. The seventh-grade team won by the scores of 25-16 and 25-20. Maura Murphy served 15 aces followed by Lanny Kilpatrick with five serving aces. The eighth-grade won in two games by the scores of 25-19 and 29-27. Marissa Melewski had nine aces followed by Keimanni Boyd with two aces and six points. Abbie Sammartino had four aces and three points.

Boardman volleyball defeats Austintown Fitch 3-1

In the Sept. 8 game, Boardman varsity volleyball won against Austintown Fitch 3-1 with the scores 26-28, 25-22, 25-11 and 25-13. Katie Platt had 11 points, three aces and 53 assists. Kristia Johnson had 61 attempts, 21 kills and 18 digs. This brings Boardman’s record to 4-2 and 2-1 in the AAC Red.

Boys soccer ties with Canfield

On Sept. 10, Boardman’s boys varsity soccer team tied with Canfield 0-0. Boardman took eight shots against Canfield and Kevin Durkin had 10 saves against Canfield. Boardman’s record stands at 1-3-2 for the season and 1-2-1 in the AAC Red.

Boardman volleyball falls to Lakeview

On Sept. 10, the Boardman High School volleyball team dropped to Lakeview. After losing the first two sets (19-25, 23-25), the Lady Spartans rallied back to win the third (25-22) before falling short in the fourth (22-25). Standout players for Boardman were Krista Johnson with 25 digs, 14 kills and four aces; Katie Platt with 32 assists and 17 digs; Kaylin Burkey with 15 digs, 11 kills and three aces and Courtney Platt with 17 digs. The record is now 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the AAC.

Boardman coed cross country places fourth

The Glenwood boys cross country team took fourth place at the East Palestine Invitational on Sept. 12 making their record 22-7 on the season. The top seven runners for Boardman Glenwood Middle School were Noah Basista (seventh), Matt DunLany (18th), Caleb Zubanek (27th), Tommy Fryda (32nd), Jake Hughes (36th), CJ Cordon (43rd) and Siman Mascola (46th). The Glenwood girls team placed fifth out of twelve teams on Sept. 12, making their record 13-17. Top runners for Boardman Glenwood Middle School were Ayssa DiNapoli (13th), Hannah Davitt (27th), Abby Yocum (29th), Emily Olexa (40th), Mary Brown (66th), Rylie Grantonic (70th) and Jill Rivera (73rd).

Spartan girls tennis falls to Cardinal Mooney

On Sept. 12, the Boardman High School girls tennis team lost to Cardinal Mooney 2-3. The doubles team of Nadine Gambril and Annie Ryan won their match 6-3 and 6-1. Kate Bodamer and Carly Amendola won their match 6-0 and 6-1.

Girls varsity soccer drops the ball against Austintown Fitch

The Spartans dropped a close one to Austintown Fitch on Sept. 12 by a score of 2-0. Camille Holzschuh recorded 12 saves for the Spartans, including a diving stop with 16:16 remaining in the first half. The Falcons scored one goal in the first half and one in the second half to hold onto the lead.

Boardman girls varsity tennis beats Austintown Fitch

On Sept. 8, the Spartans beat the Austintown Fitch Varsity girls tennis team 4-1. The Spartans took two out of three single matches and both doubles matches to earn the win over the Falcons. In singles, Nicolina Fredrick and Morgan Bindas both won their matches. Fredrick won 6-1 and 6-2 and Bindas won her match 6-1 and 6-0. The double team of Nadine Gabriel and Kate Bodamer won in 6-0 and 6-1 and Katie Ryan and Carly Amendola won 6-3 and 7-5.

The school year is almost upon us and soon fall sports will begin. Neighbors wants to be there every step of the way. If you’re a fall sports coach or the parent of an athlete, we need you help. In order to get teams and players the recognition they deserve, we want to showcase them in our pages. We can only do that if you commit to sending us game reports and photos each week.
