YSU celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

The 2015 Hispanic Heritage Month, observed from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, will be celebrated with cultural and educational programs at Youngstown State University and throughout the community.

The Youngstown State University Hispanic Heritage Planning Committee through the YSU Office of Student Diversity Programs has partnered with the community for the celebration.

“Celebrating and Connecting Communities” is the theme for this year’s celebration.

An opening ceremony for Hispanic Heritage Month will take place from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. today in the rotunda at the Mahoning County Courthouse, 120 Market St.

There will be a flag ceremony representing 22 Hispanic countries and musical performances. Opening remarks will be provided by William Blake, director of the YSU Office of Student Diversity Programs. Special guests and dignitaries will be in attendance.

Keynote speaker will be YSU professor Dr. Gabriel Palmer-Fernandez, and YSU student Bruno Serrano will serve as emcee.
