Carter: No ill effects from treatments

ATLANTA

A fit-looking Jimmy Carter said Tuesday night he hasn’t suffered any ill effects after completing two of several planned cancer treatments.

Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, held court for roughly an hour during “Conversation with the Carters,” a wide-ranging discussion that touched on his health, the Carter Center’s global programs, race relations and the problems surrounding the growing number of Syrian refugees.

It was the 90-year-old former president’s first official Carter Center event since disclosing the full scope of his cancer diagnosis in August.

Chelsea Clinton: Mom’s my hero

NEW YORK

Chelsea Clinton said Tuesday it’s surprising to hear her mom is slipping in the polls because she’s “my hero.”

The young Clinton, who has a daughter of her own, says she believes that as more Americans get a chance to hear from Hillary Rodham Clinton they’ll understand “why I believe so strongly that she would make a great president.”

Despite a big fundraising advantage and a slew of endorsements from party leaders, Hillary Clinton’s standing with voters has slipped. Multiple polls show a majority of Americans don’t find her honest and trustworthy.

Chelsea Clinton was asked about those polls on NBC’s “Today” show.

“I’m not a pundit. I’m a daughter,” she said. “And I love and admire my mom.”

Seattle teachers have tentative pact

SEATTLE

School will resume Thursday for Seattle’s 53,000 students after teachers who have been on strike for a week reached a tentative agreement with Washington state’s largest school district.

The union’s board of directors and representative assembly voted Tuesday evening to suspend the strike and urged the 5,000 members to approve the three-year deal. The union’s full membership votes on the contract Sunday.

Clashes continue for 3rd day at holy site

JERUSALEM

Israel’s prime minister vowed tougher measures to curb Palestinian violence at an emergency meeting Tuesday night after police clashed with Palestinian protesters in a third straight day of unrest at Jerusalem’s most sensitive holy site during the Jewish new year holiday of Rosh Hashanah.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel “will use all necessary measures to fight against those who throw stones, firebombs, pipe bombs and fireworks in order to attack civilians and police. On the eve of the holiday it was again proven that throwing stones can kill.” He said he will take steps so that attackers will face tougher punishment.

On Monday, an Israel died after Palestinians pelted his car with rocks. And several Israeli civilians and police were injured in various attacks by Palestinians this week.

Biden blasts Trump

WASHINGTON

Vice President Joe Biden lashed out at Republican front-runner Donald Trump on immigration Tuesday, accusing him of reverting to “xenophobia” to garner support in the 2016 election.

Biden, who is weighing a late entry into the Democratic presidential primary, called Trump’s message “sick” and predicted it “will not prevail.”

“This will pass – the Trump stuff and that stuff that you’re hearing on the other team,” Biden said at a Hispanic Heritage Month event at his residence in Washington.
