Hubbard player recovers in Cleveland

CLEVELAND

Hubbard High School football player Devin Howe is recovering in Metro Hospital from a head injury suffered during Friday’s game against Edgewood in Ashtabula.

Hubbard Superintendent Ray Soloman told Vindicator broadcast partner WFMJ Channel 21 that he visited Howe on Sunday and the player is in good spirits.

An offensive lineman, Howe was hit hard on a play then received medical attention on the sideline. Howe was originally transported to an Ashtabula hospital, then life-flighted to Cleveland.

On Saturday, Howe’s brother Greg posted a message on Facebook: “My brother just went through brain surgery and the doctors said it went good so now it’s just a waiting game to see his progress during recovery. If you guys could send your prayers and blessings to Devin Howe it would be greatly appreciated. That boy is stronger than anyone knows and right now he can use all the support he can get.”

Riese’s overtime goal lifts Penguins

YOUNGSTOWN

Senior Macey Riese scored her first goal of the season in the first overtime period to lift the Youngstown State women’s soccer team to a 3-2 win over Findlay at Farmers National Bank Field.

With about three minutes remaining in the first extra period, Shannon Leghart lofted a direct kick into the Findlay penalty box. The Oilers’ goalkeeper mishandled the pass and Riese crashed the net and slipped a shot in the left side of the goal for the game winner.

Also scoring for the Penguins were Alison Green and Katie Hackos.

The Penguins open Horizon League play at home on Friday at 7 p.m. against Northern Kentucky.

Ravens’ Suggs out for season

It was a rough week for NFL linebackers in Week 1, most notably Baltimore’s Terrell Suggs.

Baltimore’s six-time Pro Bowl selection tore his left Achilles in the Ravens’ 19-13 loss to the Denver Broncos.

Two-time Pro Bowl selection Luke Kuechly, who just became the league’s highest-paid middle linebacker on Thursday, left Carolina’s game against Jacksonville in the first half after sustaining a concussion on a fairly basic tackle against Jaguars running back T.J. Yeldon.

Kuechly, who has never missed a game in his first three seasons, wobbled as he got up and then dropped back to the ground again. He appeared a little woozy as he left the field.

Kuechly will enter the concussion protocol and be re-evaluated later in the week.

EVIAN-LES-BAINS, France

Lydia Ko became the youngest major champion in LPGA Tour history at the Evian Championship.

The South Korean-born New Zealander closed with an 8-under 63 for a six-stroke victory over Lexi Thompson at the final major of the season.

Ko is 18 years, 4 months and 20 days old. She eclipsed the previous record of American Morgan Pressel, who was 18 years, 10 months and nine days old when she won the 2007 Kraft Nabisco Championship.

Ko, who was runner-up in Evian two years ago, stayed bogey-free and hit eight birdies in her final round.
