Bessemer chief dies
NEW CASTLE, PA.
The Pennsylvania State Police are investigating the death of Bessemer Borough Police Department’s chief Sunday afternoon.
Thomas Macri, 56, of New Castle was home alone cleaning a .40-caliber compact pistol that discharged and struck him in the lower, left chest area at 1 p.m. He was discovered by his girlfriend and transported to Jameson Hospital where he died.
Officials said the investigation does not reveal any signs of foul play or suspicious activity, but a forensic exam will be conducted today. Macri also was a retired New Castle City police officer.
South Side shooting
YOUNGSTOWN
Police are investigating a South Side shooting Sunday night. A man, who police did not identify Sunday night, entered a home in the 300 block of Hilton Avenue after he was shot in the shoulder about 8:20 p.m.
He is in stable condition at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries. Police were unsure where he was shot.
Drug arrest in city
YOUNGSTOWN
Police arrested Brandi Williams, 26, of Youngstown on a drug-possession charge Saturday evening.
She was arrested at 5:02 p.m. after police pulled over a vehicle in which she was a rear-seat passenger, at Mahoning Avenue for failing to signal a turn. Williams had a warrant for her arrest and a police search produced more than 50 pills in her purse. She was transported to the Mahoning County jail.
Gas-station robbery

Police are investing an aggravated robbery at a gas station on Market Street on Saturday night.
Two men, one wielding a gun, robbed a 39-year-old who was taking out trash outside the Gateway Gas Mart at 11:07 p.m. After handing over to them $120 and his passport, one of the men knocked the victim to the ground where he was continually punched and kicked. They fled in an unknown direction, and the victim ran into the store where he collapsed. He was transported to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital for evaluation of internal injuries.
Group to meet
YOUNGSTOWN
The Garden District Neighborhood Association will host its monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Fellows Riverside Garden.
President Jerry O’Hara will preside, and Councilman Mike Ray, D-4th, will give activity updates concerning the neighborhood, the West Side and the rest of the city.
Plans will be finalized for the Mahoning Avenue Better Block event scheduled for 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sept. 26.
