Saturday’s other Big Ten Conference games

Michigan 35, Oregon State 7

ANN ARBOR, MICH.

Jim Harbaugh was a winner in his home debut as Michigan’s coach thanks in large part to Howland High School graduate De’Veon Smith’s 126 yards rushing and three touchdowns. Michigan (1-1) got a few breaks in the pivotal second quarter and made the most of them against the Beavers (1-1), who gave up 35 straight points after scoring first. Smith gave the Wolverines a running game they lacked in last week’s loss to Utah.

Illinois 44, Western Illinois 0

CHAMPAIGN, ILL.

Wes Lunt threw for 316 yards and a touchdown Saturday to lead Illinois to its second-straight blowout win. Lunt had 240 yards by halftime and Illinois (2-0) carried a 30-0 lead to the locker room. Geronimo Allison was Lunt’s favorite target with eight catches for 124 yards. Western Illinois (1-1) was coming off a 35-3 win over fellow Football Championship Subdivision school Eastern Illinois. But the step up to a Big Ten team was a struggle. The Leathernecks finished the day with 141 total yards.

Wisconsin 58, Miami (Ohio) 0

MADISON, WIS.

Joel Stave threw for 236 yards and three scores, and Wisconsin’s dominating defense had three interceptions in Paul Chryst’s home debut as head coach. Rob Wheelwright had two touchdown catches for Wisconsin (1-1), and Dare Ogunbowale had 112 yards rushing and a touchdown in place injured starter Corey Clement.

Purdue 38, Indiana State 14

WEST LAFAYETTE, IND.

Austin Appleby threw four touchdown passes, including three of 50 yards or more during the first half, leading Purdue against FCS opponent Indiana State. Appleby, who was intercepted four times during the Boilermakers’ season-opening loss at Marshall, two of which were returned for touchdowns, redeemed himself against the Sycamores (1-1), completing 12 of 18 passes for 234 yards and the aforementioned three TDs during the first 30 minutes, helping Purdue (1-1) snap a seven-game losing streak.

Penn State 27, Buffalo 14

STATE COLLEGE, PA.

Penn State recovered from a sluggish start and outlasted Buffalo through heavy rain at Beaver Stadium. True freshmen Brandon Polk and Saquon Barkley each ran for touchdowns for Penn State (1-1) Christian Hackenberg completed 14 of 27 passes for 128 yards and a touchdown and Joey Julius kicked a pair of field goals in the 27-14 win. Buffalo quarterback Joe Licata tossed touchdown passes to Ron Willoughby and Marcus McGill.

Bowling Green 48, Maryland 27

COLLEGE PARK, MD.

Matt Johnson threw for a career-high six touchdowns, including two to Roger Lewis, leading Bowling Green. Johnson also connected with Robbie Rhodes, Ryan Burbink, Derek Lee and Gehrig Dieter while throwing for 491 yards to best another career high set last week at Tennessee. Lewis’ 200 receiving yards also marked a career high.

Minnesota 23, Colorado State 20

FORT COLLINS, COLO.

Defensive tackle Scott Ekpe stripped running back Dalyn Dawkins on the first play of overtime and Ryan Santoso kicked an 18-yard field goal, giving Minnesota a win. The game was dominated by defense until the final minute of regulation. After converting just 4 of 17 third downs, the Gophers (1-1) converted a fourth-and-6 pass play from their 40 on their way to the go-ahead touchdown with 55 seconds left — a 22-yard pass from Mitch Leidner to KJ Maye.

Northwestern 41, Eastern Illinois 0

EVANSTON, ILL.

Redshirt freshman Clayton Thorson threw his first career touchdown pass and ran one in himself for the second straight game to lead Northwestern. Justin Jackson and Warren Long also rushed for scores as the Wildcats had their way on the ground and in the air against the Panthers. Thorson completed 11 of 16 passes for 152 yards.

Washington State 37, Rutgers 34

PISCATAWAY, N.J.

Luke Falk led a 10-play, 90-yard touchdown drive, finding River Cracraft with an eight-yard strike with :13 left to lift Washington State. Falk threw for 468 yards and four touchdowns. While Janarion Grant tried to be the hero for Rutgers, returning two kicks for touchdowns, he couldn’t return the final kickoff for a touchdown.

Iowa 31, Iowa State 17

AMES, IOWA

C.J. Beathard threw three touchdown passes, including the tie-breaker to Riley McCarron with 2:14 left, lifting Iowa. Jordan Canzeri’s fumble deep in Iowa State territory had thwarted an earlier drive by the Hawkeyes (2-0). But their defense forced the Cyclones (1-1) to punt, Desmond King returned it to midfield and Beathard took the Hawkeyes to the decisive score, finding the 5-foot-9 McCarron in the back of the end zone from 25 yards out.
