Kent State 45, Delaware State 13
KENT
Kent State dominated Delaware State in the Golden Flashes’ home opener, but it was overshadowed by a single point-after kick in the second quarter by April Goss. Goss, a four-year member of the Kent State team and a former high school soccer player, became the second female to score in a Division I game in NCAA history. Katie Hnida kicked a pair of extra points for New Mexico in 2003. Poland High School hraduate Colin Reardon was 11 of 16 passing for 142 yard and three touchdowns to lead Kent State. Trayion Durham and George Bollas had touchdown runs of 22- and 12-yards, respectively. Delaware State was held to minus-33 total yards, but the Hornets returned two Kent State turnovers for touchdowns. William Burton returned a fumble 35 yards for a second-quarter score. Terrick Colston scooped up a Bollas fumble and raced 72-yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.
Pittsburgh 24, Akron 7
AKRON
Qadree Ollison rushed for 81 yards and a touchdown, powering Pittsburgh over Akron. The 6-foot-2, 230-pound freshman logged 21 carries despite leaving the field twice with minor left leg injuries. Nate Peterman added an 18-yard scoring pass to J.P. Holtz as the Panthers (2-0) held off the Zips (0-2) at waterlogged InfoCision Stadium. A soaking rain began two hours before kickoff and continued the entire game. Peterman completed 12 of 17 attempts for 148 yards, while fellow junior Tyler Boyd returned from a one-game suspension to make 11 catches for 95 yards. The junior sat out Pitt’s season opener after being charged with driving under the influence in June. Mid-American Conference member Akron upset the Panthers 21-10 last Sept. 27 at Heinz Field, but was unable to repeat the feat at home. The attendance of 23,425 was the second largest in stadium history.
Northern Illinois 57, Murray State 26
DEKALB, ILL.
Drew Hare threw four touchdowns as Northern Illinois beat Murray State. Hare was 29 of 38 for 358 yards for the Huskies (2-0). Two of his TD throws went to Kenny Golladay, who finished with 136 yards receiving. Shane Wimann also caught a pair of touchdowns. Hare hit Wimann from 4 yards for the game’s first score with 7:52 left in the first quarter. KD Humphries finished with 281 yards and a pair of touchdowns for the Racers (1-1).
Georgia Southern 43, Western Michigan 17
STATESBORO, GA.
Matt Breida rushed for four touchdowns and Antonio Glover intercepted three passes to lead Georgia Southern. Breida scored on runs of 9, 4 and 34 yards in the first half and added a 70-yard touchdown in the third quarter. He has eight scoring runs of 50 yards or more in his career.
Central Michigan 31, Monmouth 10
MOUNT PLEASANT, MICH.
Cooper Rush threw for 328 yards and three touchdowns, including an 83-yarder to Ben McCord, to help Central Michigan beat Monmouth (N.J.). Central Michigan (1-1) led 31-3 at halftime after Rush completed 21 of 29 attempts for 301 yards and the defense held Monmouth (0-2) to minus-3 yards rushing and forced punts on each of the Hawks’ first four drives.
Colorado 48, Massachusetts 14
BOULDER, COLO.
Michael Adkins and Christian Powell became the first Colorado tailbacks to eclipse 100 yards rushing in the same game in nearly five years, helping the Buffaloes snap a nine-game losing skid. A week after looking out of sorts in a season-opening loss at Hawaii, the Buffaloes found their groove on offense as they gained 558 yards.
Eastern Michigan 48, Wyoming 29
LARAMIE, WYO.
Brogan Roback passed for 330 yards and three touchdowns and Shaq Vann rushed for 129 yards and two scores to help Eastern Michigan beat Wyoming. After punting on its first possession, Eastern Michigan (1-1) scored on six straight drives to go up 38-7. Brian Hill had touchdown runs of 65 and five yards, for Wyoming (0-2). He finished with 242 yards rushing, the fourth most in school history.
Ohio 21, Marshall 10
ATHENS
Ohio running back A.J. Ouellette’s one-yard touchdown run with 2:05 left in the fourth quarter secured the Bobcats’ victory over the Thundering Herd. Ohio quarterback JD Sprague threw for 127 yards and one touchdown in the victory.
