49ers’ Bowman returns after long layoff

SANTA CLARA, Calif.

San Francisco’s opener Monday night will mark 603 days since All-Pro linebacker NaVorro Bowman saw meaningful game action for the 49ers.

In his last game, Bowman was carted off the field in Seattle in the second half of the NFC Championship game in January 2014 after suffering a career-altering left knee injury.

Bowman tore his anterior cruciate ligament and medial collateral ligament on a goal-line run after a teammate fell into his leg. The opener against Minnesota will be the 27-year-old’s first regular- season game in Levi’s Stadium, which opened last season with the three-time All-Pro sidelined.

Bowman’s first test: All-Pro running back Adrian Peterson and the Minnesota Vikings.

“This is a back that you want to face, just see if you’re back at the level of where I was at,” Bowman said.

Kamara scores twice, lifts Crew over Union

CHESTER, Pa.

Kei Kamara scored in the 21st and 26th minutes and the Columbus Crew held on to beat the Philadelphia Union 2-1 on Saturday night.

The Crew (12-9-8) took the lead when a Union defender deflected Harrison Afful’s cross from the right flank to Kamara, who finished with a header from near the far post. They were in nearly the same places 5 minutes later when Kamara tapped in Afful’s low untouched cross with his right foot his MLS-leading 20th goal of the season.

The Union (8-15-6), who entered the game a point out of an Eastern Conference playoff position, pressed their attack in the second half, creating many chances, including C.J. Sapong’s 66th-minute goal.

But Crew goalkeeper Steve Clark had five saves after the break to preserve the win.
