Last December, eight bus loads of excited children descended upon Walmart for holiday shopping, thanks to the annual Struthers Shop with a Cop fundraiser.
Shop with a Cop, now in its fourth year, allows underprivileged children from Struthers and Lowellville to go shopping with police officers and other city officials.
A car show at Fifth Street Plaza from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday will raise money for this year’s shopping excursion, tentatively set for Dec. 13.
Registration for the car show will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. It is $8 to pre-register a car and $10 to register at the door.
Along with a display of classic cars, visitors can enjoy food, a disc jockey, goodie bags, door prizes and an auction. A number of local businesses have donated to make the event possible. The car show is a tribute to the notorious police car used to chase the Duke boys in the 1970-80s TV show “The Dukes of Hazzard.”
The police department was able to sponsor more than 160 children last year, and the event has grown, Capt. Patrick Bundy said. Each child who participates in Shop with a Cop will receive $100 for shopping – $50 for clothes and $50 for toys.
In years past, Bundy noticed kids trying to buy items for their siblings. He was touched by their selflessness, but has since ensured that siblings will get to shop, too.
“We just want to make sure every kid gets a decent Christmas,” Bundy said. “For some of these kids, it might be the only Christmas they get.”
