2 men fight over slots at Austintown racino

Two men got in a fight over a video-lottery terminal Wednesday night at Hollywood Gaming at Mahoning Valley Race Course.

Anthony J. Lawrence Sr., 71, of Campbell, was arrested and released with a summons for misdemeanor assault. He also was given a warning not to return to Hollywood Gaming’s property or be charged with criminal trespass.

According to a police report, a 70-year-old Brookfield man was playing four VLTs at one time at about 8 p.m. Wednesday, and Lawrence went up to one of the machines to play it. The Brookfield man said he had his money in it, but Lawrence continued to try to play it.

That man told police he walked toward Lawrence, who then struck him in the face. Video surveillance wasn’t clear if the punch landed.

A Youngstown woman faces an impaired-driving charge after she was pulled over Wednesday night on Market Street near U.S. Route 224.

Angie Webb, 39, of Hazelwood Avenue, was cited for speed, driving under suspension, operating a vehicle while impaired and operating a vehicle while impaired with prohibited blood-alcohol concentration.

A breath test reportedly determined that Webb had a BAC of 0.099. The legal limit in Ohio is 0.08.

Water pressure in Austintown and Canfield townships returned to normal Thursday night.

Eugene Leson Jr., Youngstown Water Department chief engineer, said crews welded a patch over thedamaged water main line about 5 p.m. Thursday.

A contractor working on a communications tower on Kirk Road hit the line there Wednesday afternoon. The 42-inch line runs from northwest Austintown to Kirk and Meridian roads.

Youngstown Water Department officials will look at options for a permanent repair for the line, which is “one of the main feeder [lines] for Austintown and Canfield,” Leson said.

Prayer rally for safe school year in city

YOUNGSTOWN

Beulah Missionary Baptist Church, 570 Sherwood Ave., will sponsor an outdoor rally from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday for children returning to school.

The event will feature a speaker representing Community Initiative to Reduce Violence , NOW Youngstown and the Jericho Project. Participants will pray for a safe school year without violence.

Cemetery tour

City cleanup, recycling drives set at Covelli

On Saturday, the Covelli Centre will be headquarters of a citywide cleanup from 8 a.m. to noon and the site of a tire recycling collection from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Cleanup participants may pick up free garbage bags, gloves and T-shirts at the center before picking up litter or preparing vacant land for a garden.

In the tire recycling drive, Mahoning County residents may recycle up to 10 passenger car tires free of charge and pay $2 per passenger car tire thereafter. The events are sponsored by Green Youngstown and funded by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency.
