Weekly E. coli tests at Lake Newport again yield mixed results
YOUNGSTOWN — As in previous weeks, the seventh round of testing for E. coli in Lake Newport and Mill Creek yielded mixed results, according to results released today by the Mahoning County District Board of Health.
Samples drawn near the Lake Newport boathouse on West Newport Drive and the Lake Newport boat launch showed low counts of E. coli, while samples drawn near a footbridge over Mill Creek just north of Shields Road showed levels well above the threshold that the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency considers to represent a potential public health risk.
Testing at those sites will continue for the next five weeks. It is a response to previous testing that found elevated levels of E. coli in the lake, which in July prompted Mill Creek MetroParks officials to close park bodies of water to the public.
