Facing drug charges
CANFIELD
A Youngstown man was arrested on a drug-trafficking charge in the city Tuesday.
Joseph M. Carlson, 42, faces charges of drug trafficking, a fifth-degree felony, and three minor misdemeanors, possession of drug paraphernalia, drug possession and having a loud exhaust.
According to police, he was stopped at about 4:40 p.m. for a loud exhaust on his vehicle. Carlson explained that part of his exhaust was missing, but he appeared nervous, a police report said.
An officer smelled marijuana in the vehicle, and Carlson consented to a search. About 70 grams of the suspected drug was found in about four separate bags, along with a digital scale and rolling paper underneath the passenger seat.
Driver-education class
SALEM
Tire Rack Street Survival, a 501(c)(3) organization and the largest active nonprofit national driver-education program, will teach teens the skills they need to stay alive behind the wheel from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Salem High School, 1200 E. 6th St.
Students will receive a short classroom session, then will learn, hands-on, how to manage everyday driving hazards, obstacles and challenges in a controlled environment on an advanced driving course.
Students learn emergency braking and skid control, how to control proper braking, and how to avoid accidents entirely.
Students are taught in their own cars so the skills they learn can be directly translated to their daily driving experiences.
The program is open to licensed and permitted drivers age 15–21. Forms, schedules and more information can be found online at www.streetsurvival.org. The cost is $75 per student, and some insurance companies offer premium discounts to graduates.
