SDLqHow the Grouch Saved Christmas,SDRq an original musical directed by Dr. Jeanne Zingale, Penn State Shenango Auditorium, 147 Shenango Ave., Sharon, Pa., auditions from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 12. All auditionees will be asked to perform a vocal selection from a familiar Christmas song (most characters sing, but not all), to improvise a short scene as a child’s toy, and to do a cold reading from the script. Callbacks will be the following Saturday if needed. Participants should note that auditioners will be photographed and videotaped as part of the audition process. Children under age 18 will need a parent or guardian present and written permission to take part in the audition/production. There will be an evening Dec. 4 and matinee Dec. 5 and 6 performances. “A Youngstown Nutcracker,SDRq Ballet Western Reserve, 218 W. Boardman St., Youngstown, auditions Sept. 12. Dancers are required to be age 6 or older by the time of the performance Dec. 5, and must be enrolled in one ballet class at BWR. The “Youngstown Nutcracker” retells the classic story with famous historical Youngstown figures. Performances will be at 10 a.m. Dec. 4, and 2 and 7 p.m. Dec. 5.

“Mary Poppins,SDRq The Youngstown Playhouse will have auditions for the musical from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at the theater, off Glenwood Avenue. Mandatory callbacks will be scheduled at a later date. Performances will be Dec. 4-12, with a school matinee Dec. 9. Director is Bernie Appugliese. Kayla Boye, a professional actor/dancer, will perform the role of Mary Poppins and serve as choreographer with Joanna Andrei. Matthew White is the musical director. All other roles are open. Auditionees should prepare a brief vocal selection. An accompanist will be provided. Auditionees also will be required to learn a short dance sequence.
