Jury selection starts in trial over Ohio policeman’s slaying

AKRON, Ohio (AP) — Jury selection has begun in the trial of a man accused of fatally shooting an off-duty policeman who had tried to get him to leave a northeast Ohio pub last November.

Thirty-six-year-old Kenan Ivery of Akron has pleaded not guilty on 18 counts, including aggravated murder.

Authorities allege Ivery became unruly and was asked to leave a local pub, then returned with a gun and shot Akron officer Justin Winebrenner. The 32-year-old Winebrenner was unarmed.

Several other people in the pub were injured.

The Akron Beacon Journal reports more than 150 prospective jurors showed up Tuesday for the start of jury selection, and more will arrive later this week.

The process is expected to take two weeks. Opening statements in the trial are set for Sept. 28.
