Pitt RB Conner likely out for year

PITTSBURGH

Pittsburgh running back James Conner will miss the rest of the 2015 season after tearing the MCL in his right knee during Saturday’s win over Youngstown State.

The reigning ACC Player of the Year ran for a pair of early touchdowns against the Penguins before tweaking the knee on a carry early in the second quarter. Coach Pat Narduzzi initially held James out as a precaution, but said further tests done Sunday revealed the extent of the injury.

Narduzzi said Conner will undergo surgery later this week, adding it’s too early to tell if this will affect the junior’s NFL draft status.

Arizona LB Wright to miss month

Arizona All-American linebacker Scooby Wright will miss up to a month after undergoing surgery to repair torn cartilage in his left knee.

Wright was injured in the first quarter of the 22nd-ranked Wildcats’ 42-32 win over UTSA on Thursday and tried to come back, but lasted one play before heading back to the bench. The junior spent the second half in street clothes while walking with a cane.

Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez said Monday that Wright had arthroscopic surgery to repair a lateral meniscus tear on Saturday and will miss three to four weeks.

Injured Pierre-Paul meets with Giants

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.

Two months after injuring his right hand in a July 4 fireworks accident, two-time Pro Bowl defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul has reported and met with the New York Giants.

Coach Tom Coughlin refused to say much about Pierre-Paul after practice because he had no knowledge that the player had arrived at the team’s headquarters. Teammates were expecting him.

Despite missing all of training camp, Coughlin would not rule out Pierre-Paul for the season opener in Dallas on Sunday night — provided the doctors clear him to play and he is fit.
