YSU safety Alexander earns MVFC honors

Youngstown State junior safety LeRoy Alexander, a Nebraska transfer, was named the Missouri Valley Football Conference’s defensive player of the week and newcomer of the week.
Alexander intercepted two passes in his YSU debut against Pitt, returning one 41 yards for a touchdown. He also finished with a team-high nine tackles, including six solo stops. Both of his interceptions came in the second quarter. Alexander returned a pick nine yards on the second play of the second quarter. With YSU trailing 17-6, Alexander returned an interception 41 yards for a score with 48 seconds left in the first half to cut the deficit to four points.
Penguin men’s golf wins Colgate Invite
Hamilton, N.Y.
The Youngstown State men’s golf team won the Colgate Invitational by four shots over Cornell at the Seven Oaks Golf Club Black Course.
YSU was in fifth place following an opening round 309 on Saturday, but took the 36-hole lead with a second-round 297 by five shots ahead of Bucknell. On Sunday, the Penguins were able to maintain the lead and win by four shots with a three-round total of 911. Cornell was second with a 915 while Bucknell was third and Colgate and Lafayette tied for fourth.
D.J. Holub tied for seventh place with a three-round 226 (75-76-75). Just behind Holub was South Range High graduate Brandon Pluchinsky who was ninth with a 227 (80-72-75).
The Penguins are next in action on Sept. 14-15 when they compete at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational.
YSU women’s soccer falls to Robert Morris
YOUNGSTOWN
The Youngstown State women’s soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Robert Morris on Sunday afternoon at Farmers National Bank Field.
RMU’s Antonia Grese scored the match’s only goal in the 35th minute when shot buried a shot from 25 yards out into the top middle of the net.
The Penguins (2-4) had an apparent game-tying goal by Alison Green waved off by an offside call at the 61:30 mark.
Kyler Lum led the Penguins with three shots while Katie Hackos had a pair of shots on goal. Junior goalkeeper Katie Montgomery collected three saves while freshman Elizabeth Balgoyen posted four.
The Penguins host IPFW on Friday at 7 p.m. at Farmers National Bank Field.
YSU women’s golf places sixth at invite
University Park, Pa.
The Youngstown State women’s golf team placed sixth at the Nittany Lion Invitational, which concluded on Sunday. The Penguins posted a three-round score of 931 at the event.
YSU had rounds of 314, 308 and 309 at the tournament which was won by Penn State. PSU carded a three-round 889 to beat Delaware by six shots. William & Mary was third, Rutgers was fourth, Towson was fifth ahead of the Penguins.
Leading the way for YSU were freshmen Gabby Minor and Christina Cooper.
Minor had rounds of 74, 76 and 78 at the event to finish in a tie for 13th place with a 228. Cooper had rounds of 78, 77 and 78 carding a 233 to finish 21st.
The Penguins are next in action on Sept. 26 when they face Niagara in a dual at the Culbertson Hills Golf Course in Edinboro, Pa.
Browns trade West to Titans
CLEVELAND
The Browns have given up on running back Terrance West, trading him to the Tennessee Titans for a seventh-round pick in the 2016 draft.
West was a third-round pick in 2014. He rushed for 673 yards and three touchdowns as a rookie, but never fulfilled the Browns’ expectations.
West’s departure came one day after Cleveland finalized its 53-man roster and released running back Shaun Draughn. He could be re-signed.
Isaiah Crowell is expected to be the Browns’ starting back.
