YEC NHS raises $500 for Veterans Resource Center

YOUNGSTOWN

The 2014-15 National Honor Society at Youngstown Early College raised $500 for Youngstown State University’s Veterans Resource Center.

Students, with help from Adviser Lori Sakacs, sold snacks to fellow students to raise the money as part of the organizations yearly community service project.

Charter members of YEC’s National Honor Society made that donation possible. They are Damon McDowell, president; Jumarie Figueroa, vice president; Daiijah Peeterman, secretary; Taryn Briggs, treasurer; Jerry Mims, project coordinator; Rodraneia Anderson, Deazia Berger, Taryn Briggs, Keilah Bryant, Mark Lynch, Seannille McRae, Shyla Montero, Kiara Price, Shakayla Robinson and Kristia Wheaton.

Salem native visits Taiwan as part of summer program

ASHLAND, OHIO

Nine Ashland University students and Kris Parsons, chairwoman of the university’s accounting/information systems department, spent several weeks this summer in Taiwan as part of the University’s Dauch College of Business in Taiwan summer program.

One of the students who participated was Lindsay Barth of Salem. She is majoring in marketing and entrepreneurship.

The students spent much of their time at Providence University in the Wu Chi district of Taichung, Taiwan.

The summer program involved students enrolling in two Providence University classes – Mandarin Language and Cross Cultural Business and Management Seminar.

Providence University paired the students with learning partners, who were Providence University students interested in improving their English and knowledge of the American culture.

Austintown band plans third mattress sale for Oct. 17

AUSTINTOWN

The Austintown Fitch High School Band is sponsoring its third mattress sale from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 17 in the school cafeteria.

Name-brand mattress sets including Simmons, Restonic and Southerland will be sold at 30 percent to 60 percent below retail prices.

All mattresses are top quality with full factory warranties. Delivery is available. Floor models will be displayed at the high-school cafeteria during the one-day event.

Proceeds from the sale will benefit the Fitch Band.
