2015 Liberty HOF inductees announced

Liberty

The Liberty High School Sports Hall of Fame Committee is announcing its 2015 inductees: Randy Burns, Mark Demidovich and Joe Joltin, wrestling; William Creed, basketball; Kiki Cohen Vlajkovich and Elaine Jacobs, basketball; Bradley Fletcher and Dave Malone, football, George Rohan, baseball; Jessica White, track and field; and Gene Longo, contributor.

The 11 will be honored at a banquet Oct. 23 at the Mahoning Country Club in Girard. Keynote speaker will be three-time Olympic gold medalist Katie Smith, Ohio State University’s Female Athlete of the Century and one of the most decorated American professional basketball players of all-time.

Scrappers fall to Black Bears

The West Virginia Black Bears pounced on the Mahoning Valley Scrappers for three runs in the top of the first inning en route to Saturday’s 10-3 victory at Eastwood Field.

Daniel Arribas drove in three runs on two hits that included a solo homer in the third inning. Mitchell Tolman’s three hits included a double and he scored three runs. For the Scrappers (31-42), Math mathias doubled. Kieran Lovegrove (1-8) took the loss, giving up four runs in three innings.

YBO sets meeting

Youngstown Baseball Oldtimers will meet Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at Kramer Field clubhouse on Bears Den Road to plan for the YBO golf scramble.

Tickets to go on sale for Fitch-Louisville football

Tickets for Friday’s game between the Fitch Falcons and Louisville will be available at Fitch High School on Thursday and Friday during lunches (11:30 a.m.-12:50 p.m.) and from 5-7:30 p.m. Thursday at the ticket booth in the south circle.

YSU volleyball splits at Duquesne

Aly Ryan had 12 kills, and the Youngstown State volleyball team hit .304 collectively to beat Colgate in its final match of the Pitt/Duquesne Invitational on Saturday. The set scores were 25-17, 24-26, 25-22, 25-17.

The Penguins lost earlier in the day in five sets to Duquesne, 25-21, 22-25, 18-25, 25-21, 15-12.

Ryan, an all-tournament team selection, finished a solid weekend in which she averaged 2.67 kills on a .364 attack percentage and 1.08 blocks in three matches. Lauren Thompson and Ryan both had 12 kills versus Colgate, and four more Penguins had at least seven kills in a balanced attack. YSU hit .448, .308 and .382 in its four set wins.

Youngstown State outhit Duquesne .236 to .217, but the Penguins had 11 serving errors and had three fewer aces (9-6) than the Dukes. Sarah Varcolla tied for match-high honors with 16 kills, and Nikki Thompson registered 26 digs.

YSU held a 19-14 edge in the opening set, but Duquesne scored 11 of the next 13 points to win 25-21. Youngstown State went on to take the next two sets, but the Dukes claimed the final two. The final set was tied at 12-12 after a Varcolla kill before Duquesne scored the last three points.

Impact defeat Fire

MONTREAL

Didier Drogba scored three goals in his second Major League Soccer game to help the Montreal Impact beat the Chicago Fire 4-3.

The former Chelsea and Ivory Coast striker completed the hat trick with the winning goal, heading in his own rebound in the 65th minute.

Wandrille Lefevre also scored for Montreal (9-11-4) in its first game under interim coach Mauro Biello following Frank Klopas’ firing. The Impact ended a four-game winless streak.

Jeff Larentowicz, Gilberto and Kennedy Igboananike scored for the Fire (7-14-6).
