Austintown Township Park hosted National Night out on Aug. 4. Police officers, firefighters, town officials and more came out to celebrate this special event with their community.
In addition to meeting people who work for the community, there were games, puzzles, food vendors, face painting and more to be found all around the park — compliments of Austintown’s Block Watch.
Betsy Gilkes brought her son, Tyrone, to see the SWAT truck, his personal favorite.
“I think it’s all so cool,” Betsy Gilkes said. “It’s really nice they have all of this going on.”
Samantha Homan came with her family to the park, not knowing this was going on, but happy that she found it.
“We came to the splash pad and I had no idea this was happening, but it was a win-win,” Homan said.
Peg Flynn from The Green Team came to National Night Out to tell people about her special group and the recycling opportunities they have and may not know about.
“This is a great way for people to get to know their community and the groups that are associated with it,” Flynn said. “I’ve been telling people about recycling and now they can go to their township building and get their bins – they don’t have to wait for us to deliver them so that helps.”
Vicci Mosko came with her mother and three children to National Night Out. Mosko agreed this event is a useful tool for both parents and children to become comfortable with their community officials.
“It’s a great way, especially with the police and the fire, to not be afraid of them in case of anything,” Mosko said. “A lot of kids are because they are taught to be afraid, seeing them at a fun event really helps.”
