A luncheon will be served for $20 consisting of swiss chicken, roast pork, stuffed shells, sandtrap potatoes, California vegetable medley and cherries in the snow for dessert, along with beverages and rolls and butter. The guest speakers will be Mr. and Mrs. Jim Sutman, owners of Gallagher’s Lunch Bucket in the Oak Hill Renaissance Building, The Purple Cat and Golden String Radio. Knitting Guild to meet
The Western Reserve Knitting Guild will meet on Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. at Fair Park in Canfield. A program on knitted pumpkins will be given by Michele Barratt as well as a trunk show by The Flaming Ice Cube of Boardman. Members are encouraged to bring their fair entries and other knitted and crocheted items they wish to share for show and tell. The Man Up Mahoning Valley Prostate Cancer Support Group will meet from 5:15-6:30 p.m. on Sept. 9, at Partners for Urology Health, located at 6262 Mahoning Ave. in Austintown. Cancer survivor nutrition program set
Cancer survivors are invited to feed their bodies and nourish their souls during a free nutrition program in the Serenity Garden at the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center Sept. 16 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Kathy S. Padgitt, M.D., who practices at The Kidney Group Inc. and The Center for Lifestyle Change, and Kayla Aulise, RD, LDN, oncology services, Mercy Health Youngstown, will explain how cancer survivors can empower themselves by taking charge of their everyday nutrition. There will also be plenty of healthful foods to sample. Space is limited and reservations are required and can be made by calling 330-480-2763. Senior dinner discussion to be Sept. 15

Gamblers Anonymous to meet
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting takes place every Friday at Westminster Church, located 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another takes place every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend.
Newcomers Club to meet Sept. 8
The Newcomers Club of Canfield September meeting will be on Sept. 8 at 6:30 p.m. at the home of Tamara Sigler. The theme of the evening will be “Friend in a Minute.” Make new friends and learn more about old friends, speed dating style. This is the perfect meeting for new members. Bring a friend. Welcome back picnic to be Sept. 14
The Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League will have its annual welcome back picnic on Sept. 14 at the Georgeanna Parker Center in Boardman Park at 6 p.m. and general meeting at 7 p.m. All members are asked to bring a covered dish to enjoy for the evening. Members will be collecting school supplies that are needed for Struthers Middle School. This school was selected because of the hard work of the Meadors girls who attend there and are BP Juniorettes. Mercy Health program addresses portion size
How much is a serving? Most Americans don’t know. That’s one of the factors contributing to the obesity epidemic in the United States. Learn what constitutes a single serving and how to manage portion size during the next “Healthy Eating for You: Portion Control” presentation Sept. 15 at St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital, located at 8401 Market St. in Boardman. Registered dietitian and community educator Bridget Lackey will lead the informational discussion and answer questions from 12:30-2 p.m. in the Willow Room. Byrne and Kelly to perform in Canfield
Celtic Thunder’s Neil Byrne and Ryan Kelly will be returning to Canfield for a performance Sept. 13 at Avion on the Water, located at 2177 W. Western Reserve Road, as part of their 2015 summer tour. Joined by musicians Nicole Hudson on fiddle and Peter Sheridan on mandolin and keyboard, Byrne and Kelly will present an acoustic concert of music driven by vocal harmonies combining traditional Irish, Americana and original songs to create a fresh, folk sound. Local college students named to Spring 2015 Dean’s List
Students from Canfield have been named to the Dean’s List for the spring semester 2015 at Baldwin Wallace University, according to Stephen D. Stahl, provost. Students who receive at least a 3.6 GPA for seven or more graded hours in a single semester are named to the Dean’s List. The following students from Canfield were named to the Dean’s List: Alanna Holcomb, Katharine Richter and Hayley Ward.
ABWA to meet
The Mill Creek Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 8 at A La Cart Catering, located at 429 Lisbon St. in Canfield. Bill Arnaut, Chief of Police for the Canfield Fairgrounds, will be the speaker. YPD hosts T-shirt sale
The Youngstown Police Department is beginning its 2015 Breast Cancer T-shirt sale. New this year are children’s sizes, including youth small, youth medium and youth large at $10 each. Sing at the Canfield Fair
As has occurred for many years on the Sunday morning of the Canfield Fair (Sept. 6 this year), singers are invited to assemble at the stage near the grandstand/concourse to sing during the 9:30 a.m. Canfield Fair Ecumenical worship service. A choir rehearsal will begin at 9 a.m., followed by the presentation of two anthems during the church service. Participants will be reimbursed for their admission fee for that day. Musical direction and additional special music will be presented by Tom and Kelly Scurich, accompanied by Adrienne Lesnett.

Canfield Historical Society Fall Lecture Series
The Canfield Historical Society kicks off its Fall Lecture Series with a lecture by author Allan May on Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. The program, “Crime in the Valley,” will also be a book signing opportunity. Allan May has been interested in organized crime since he saw his first episode of the old “Untouchables” television series. An admirer of Eliot Ness for years, in 1997, May initiated the movement which resulted in the spreading of Ness’ ashes, along with his third wife’s and adopted son’s, at a memorial service in Cleveland’s historic Lake View Cemetery. May is an authority on the history of organized crime in the United States and has a personal library of over 800 books on the subject. His earlier works are “Mob Stories” (2001) and “Gangland Gotham” (2009). Recent publications include “Welcome to the Jungle Inn” (2011), “Crimetown U.S.A.” (2013) and “The Sly-Fanner Murders” (2014). May is also the historian at Lake View Cemetery and is part of the speaker’s bureau. He wrote the “Who’s Who of Lake View Cemetery,” which includes biographies on over 250 noted personalities buried there. The free lecture takes place at the Canfield Historical Society Bond House, located at 44 West Main Street in Canfield, across from the Canfield library. No pre-registration is necessary. Dairy Queen stores raise funds
The Dairy Queen Stores in Cornersburg (3555 S. Meridian Road in Youngstown), Austintown DQ (146 N. Canfield Niles Road) and Columbiana DQ (241 E. Park Ave) all operated by the Smith family of Canfield raised $8,464 during the 10th Annual DQ Æ Miracle Treat Day to support Akron Children’s Hospital, the local Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals (CMN Hospitals). On Miracle Treat Day, these DQ stores donated $1 or more from every Blizzard Æ Treat sold to Akron Children’s Hospital. Throughout the year, the restaurant raises funds for the for Akron Children’s Hospital, Boardman campus through a variety of initiatives including free cone day, a Bucks for Buckets campaign, Miracle Treat Day, the Radiothon and other events, as well. CMN Hospitals is a non-profit organization dedicated to saving and improving the lives of children by raising funds for children’s hospitals. Since 1984, the Dairy Queen system has raised more than $100 million for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals in local communities.
The Gathering Place
Lord of Life Church, located at 550 N. Broad Street in Canfield, will host a Gathering Place event on Sept. 14 at 11 a.m. The program will feature Jeanette and Press Hess, who will discuss their organization, Seniors Helping Seniors. Lunch will be provided by The Woodlands at Hampton Woods. This is a free community outreach social program offered to all senior citizens that takes place on the second Monday of every month. Different games and activities are offered at each meeting.
Service changes at Lord of Life
Going forward, there will be a change in Sunday worship service at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, located at 550 N. Broad Street in Canfield. Worship with Holy Communion service will start at 10:15 a.m. as of Sept. 13. Child care will continue to be provided at 10:15 a.m. Sunday school for preschool through grade 6 will take place for half an hour, beginning at 9:30 a.m. and ending at 10 a.m. On Sept. 13, the church will celebrate Rally Day, beginning at 9:30 a.m. for all ages. Rally Day is a celebration of Bible and faith exploration opportunities for all ages. Saturday worship service will remain at 5 p.m.
Gant receives scholarship
Stephen Gant, of Canfield, received a full tuition Scholarship and the Provost Scholarship to attend The Ohio State University this fall. He won the Valentino Physics Academic Scholarship, awarded to one person each year at the Ohio State. Gant plans to major in Physics while studying at OSU in Columbus this Fall. He graduated in the top 10 of his class at Canfield High School, ran for the cross country team and was president of the Canfield speech and debate team in his senior year.
Prayer at the Gazebo
Due to enthusiastic response, Canfield United Methodist Church invites you to gather each Wednesday at noon at the Gazebo on the Green for a time of public prayer. This gathering is open to the public and will include a short reading from the Psalms and the lifting of prayer concerns for the community, the country and the world, as well as personal joys and concerns. Baird named to Honor Roll
The Electronic Classroom of Tomorrow (ECOT) -Ohio’s largest charter school- announced recently that 331 students were named to the school’s latest Honor Roll for middle school. Students ending each semester with a 3.0 GPA or above will be named to the Honor Roll. The only student in Mahoning County to achieve this distinction was Mark Baird, Jr. from Canfield.

Recruitment and team registration taking place
The Alzheimer’s Association Greater East Ohio Area Chapter is inviting Mahoning and Columbiana County area residents to form teams and register to participate in the Mahoning Valley Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Oct. 10 at the Watson Tressel Training Site at Youngstown State University, located at 651 Elm Street in Youngstown. The Walk is the nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer care, support, education and research. Check in is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. and opening ceremonies will begin at 9:30 a.m. The Walk to End Alzheimer’s takes place annually in more than 700 communities. The event is an inspiring and meaningful experience that calls on participants of all ages to share their collective voice as an advocate, walk in honor of their loved ones and help raise awareness of programs and services available to families affected by Alzheimer’s disease. In addition, there will be refreshments, basket drawings, a children’s corner and entertainment, as well as other activities.
Boardman Park hosts free concerts
