SACRAMENTO, Calif.

Police say at least one victim was a student in a shooting that left one person dead and two people injured in the parking lot of Sacramento City College.

Dustin Poore of Los Rios police, who patrol the campus, says the shooting Thursday afternoon began as a verbal dispute among a group of men, one of whom pulled out a gun and fired.

One person was killed, and another person was taken to a hospital. Poore says a third victim was only grazed by a bullet and required no treatment. He’s being questioned by investigators. It wasn’t clear which of those victims was the student.

Sacramento city police say the campus and its buildings have been cleared of students and staff.

But they did not find the gunman, who they say fled the shooting scene on foot wearing a white T-shirt and cargo shorts.

Classrooms and offices were on official lockdown inside the police perimeter, but officers were releasing groups of students and staff as they cleared buildings, authorities said.

Evening classes were canceled.

The corner of campus where the shooting occurred is surrounded by strip malls with chain restaurants on one side and a golf course on the other.
