GIRARD

A preliminary hearing for Anthony M. Delmont, a former Trumbull County corrections officer now charged in a burglary, is set for 10 a.m. Wednesday in Girard Municipal Court.

Delmont, who was arraigned Monday, faces a second-degree felony charge of burglary in connection with a July 13 incident on Naylor-Lloyd Road in Liberty Township.

Delmont had spent seven years as a corrections officer with the Trumbull County jail until he resigned in 2009 after allegations he had used heroin.

When the allegations arose, Delmont recently had returned to his job – he had been fired the year before for inappropriate involvement with inmates. Officials said that Delmont had obtained the numbers of female inmates, called them, sent text messages and dated some of them.

One of Delmont’s girlfriends reported to Howland police that Delmont had assaulted her in January 2009.

Delmont fought his dismissal, however, and an arbitrator granted Delmont his old job with back pay. Shortly after, the heroin-use allegations surfaced, and the jail placed Delmont on administrative leave. Delmont denied using heroin, but a urine test indicated that he had an undetermined opiate substance in his system, officials said.

Delmont’s father, Anthony R. Delmont, was a former Trumbull County maintenance director. The elder Delmont faced a three-year prison sentence beginning in 2007 after being convicted in 2006 for theft in office, bribery and money laundering. The state prison, however, released Delmont early, citing his terminal health issues. Delmont was released from prison in 2008 and died in 2010 at age 55.
