Speed caused crash

LIBERTY

Excessive speed was a factor in a single-car crash at 12:10 a.m. Sunday that killed a Girard man and critically injured his passenger, also from Girard. The crash on Logan Way just south of Stanton Street killed Serhiy Kozachuk, 39, and critically injured Konstantin Tolstykh, 24.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol said Kozachuk was driving a 2006 Infiniti G35 north on Logan Way when he failed to negotiate a curve in the road, drove off the right side of the road, striking a guard rail and utility pole, and then off the left side of the road, striking a mailbox and two utility poles. The car then caught fire. Kozachuk was pronounced dead at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital. Tolstykh is in critical condition in that same hospital.

The crash remains under investigation.

OVI citation given

YOUNGSTOWN

Reports said a woman found passed out in her car Saturday morning told police she had just dropped three of her friends off.

Yolanda Conner, 43, of Youngstown, was issued a citation for operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol after a breath test at the police station revealed she had a blood alcohol content of 0.234. The legal limit for driving in Ohio is 0.08.

Reports said officers were called to the Market Street and Indianola Avenue intersection about 6:10 a.m. for a woman passed out behind the wheel of her car. Reports said it took officers several minutes to wake the woman up, and when she did, she put her car in reverse and backed into a cruiser. She also told police she was in the military and had only three drinks the night before, reports said. Conner was issued a citation and given a Monday court date.

Stolen guitars

AUSTINTOWN

A man discovered five of his guitars worth about $20,000 were stolen after seeing one of them on eBay.

A resident of New Road filed a police report early Friday with township police about the theft. He discovered that the guitars, which he stores in his home, were missing and were taken sometime between Oct. 2013 and July 2015. He said that one day about that time frame he found a rear door to his home slightly open but nothing appeared to be missing, a police report said.

The resident noticed a guitar that looked like his on eBay, discovered the guitars missing and called police. Township police spoke with Austintown Pawn, the eBay seller, and confirmed it was the resident’s guitar. The resident listed approximate values of his stolen guitars at $12,000, $1,200, $1,000, $2,500 and $4,000.
