CANFIELD

With the Canfield Fair beginning Wednesday, directors welcomed a new addition to their ranks Tuesday evening.

Judge Scott D. Hunter of the Mahoning County Area Court in Canfield was sworn in at a fair board meeting on the fairgrounds tonight. He replaces Judge James C. Evans who died earlier this month.

“I wish sincerely there wasn’t a vacancy, but appreciate the opportunity,” Hunter said. “I’m confident you guys are going put me to work very hard.”

Evans, who spent 16 years on the Mahoning County Common Pleas Court bench before retiring last year, oversaw the police, fire and traffic at the fair.

Fair directors also will honor Henry P. Nemenz Sr., president and CEO of H.P. Nemenz Food Stores Inc., during the harness racing at the grandstand Saturday morning.

Over the past five decades, Nemenz would purchase 15 to 20 animals from the junior fair on the Thursday and Friday during the fair to butcher and sell at his stores.

“He was a big supporter of the junior fair,” said Craig L. Myers, fair board president.
