Cancer survivors are invited to feed their bodies and nourish their souls during a free nutrition program in the Serenity Garden at the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center on Sept. 16 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Dr. Kathy S. Padgitt, who practices at The Kidney Group Inc. and The Center for Lifestyle Change, and Kayla Aulise, oncology services, Mercy Health Youngstown, will explain how cancer survivors can empower themselves by taking charge of their everyday nutrition. There also will be plenty of healthful foods to sample.

Salt symposium

The Youngstown Office on Minority Health is sponsoring “A Salt Symposium: What African Americans Need to Know” from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Sept. 9 at Hitchcock Auditorium in Renaissance Place, 345 Oakhill Ave.
The featured speaker is Dr. Surender Neravetla, cardiologist from Springfield, Ohio, and author of “Salt: Black America’s Silent Killer” and “Salt Kills.”
Also, registered dietitian Daljeet Dhillon from the Mahoning County health district is instructing participants on how to read grocery labels, and Mercy Health community health educators will be on hand to provide free blood pressure screenings.

Insurance program

Western Reserve Association of Health Underwriters (WRAHU) is offering “2015 Group Life/Short Term Disability,” a one-hour continuing education program, and lunch Sept. 10 at The Fifth Floor Restaurant, 201 E. Commerce St.
Registration and lunch are from 11:30 a.m. to noon, and the presentation by Charlie Rowley, Dearborn National, will be from noon to 1 p.m.
The cost is $10 for WRAHU/OAHU members; $15 for National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAIFA) members; and $50 for guests. A guest is free with a membership application. For information or to register, visit www.wrahu.org.
Wellness program

The Salem Public Library’s Wellness Wednesday program at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 9 will be in the library’s Quaker Room, 821 E. State St.
The program, presented by Dr. Haidy Kamel, assistant professor of chemistry at Cuyahoga Community College, focuses on complementary practices and therapies and the reason for using them.

Beginning yoga

Beginning yoga classes are from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. or 7 to 8:15 p.m. beginning Sept. 14 and ending Oct. 26 at St. Joseph Warren Hospital, 667 Eastland Ave.
Dawn Perhacs, certified yoga instructor, will lead the adults-only class. The cost is $58 per person or $44 for Mercy Health employees.
