Phantoms fall 4-3 to Stampede

SIOUX FALLS, S.D.

Youngstown Phantoms goalkeeper Coin DeAugustine made 36 saves Friday, but it wasn’t enough in the Sioux Falls Stampede’s 4-3 victory.

Alex Esposito, Garrett Hall and Cameron Morrison scored for the Phantoms (4-3-1, 9 points).

Stefanos Lekkas made 25 saves for the Stampede (6-4-0, 12 points). Parker Tuomie, Josh Passolt, Jack Doremus and Collin Peters scored goals.

The Phantoms and Stampede play again tonight.

Oakland blanks YSU women’s soccer team

Rochester, Mich.

The Youngstown State women’s soccer team’s season came to an end after a 2-0 loss to Horizon League foe Oakland on Friday evening.

The Penguins finished 7-11 and 2-7 record in the Horizon League. Oakland improves to 7-5-6 overall and 6-1-2 in the league.

YSU’s seven wins are tied for the second most in a single-season in school history.

Junior goalkeeper Katie Montgomery collected eight saves but allowed goals in the 28th and 48th minutes.

The Penguins were outshot, 19-5, and had just one shot on goal.

Stopchargingmaria wins Breeders’ Distaff

LEXINGTON, Ky.

Stopchargingmaria won the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Distaff by a neck, giving trainer Todd Pletcher and jockey Javier Castellano their second victories Friday on the opening day of the world championships at Keeneland.

The last of the day’s four Cup races was the most suspenseful, with the stewards needing several minutes to sort through a foul claim and objection before declaring the results official.

Stopchargingmaria ran 11/8 miles in 1:48.98 and paid $16.20, $8.40 and $6 at 7-1 odds.

Stellar Wind returned $9.20 and $6.60, while Pletcher-trained Curalina was another 31/2 lengths back in third and paid $7 to show. Pletcher’s third horse in the field, Got Lucky, finished 10th.

Thomas shoots record 11-under 61 in CIMB

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia

Justin Thomas shot a course-record 11-under 61 on Friday in oppressive tropical heat to take a one-stroke lead in the PGA Tour’s CIMB Classic.

Thomas eagleed the par-5 third hole and had nine birdies to reach 15-under 129 at Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club. Nick Watney also shot a 61 in 2012, but that was at a different course with a par of 71.

Brendan Steele was second after a 63.

First-round leader Scott Piercy followed his opening 62 with a 69 to join Spencer Levin (64) and Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama (66) at 13 under.

Adam Scott was 10 under after a 66. Two-time defending champion Ryan Moore was 8 under after a 69.

Kim grabs lead in Blue Bay LPGA event

HAINAN ISLAND, China

South Korea’s Sei Young Kim took advantage of Chinese teen Lin Xi-yu’s wind-blown collapse to take the lead Friday in the Blue Bay LPGA.

Kim made a 3-foot birdie putt on the par-5 18th for an even-par 72 in difficult conditions along the South China Sea at Jian Lake Blue Bay.

The 22-year-old Kim had a 2-under 142 total. She won playoffs this year in the Bahamas and Hawaii in events also played in strong wind on tropical seaside layouts.

The 19-year-old Lin opened with a 67 to take the first-round lead and was 7 under and five strokes ahead after five holes. She bogeyed eight of the last 13 holes for a 77 that left her two strokes behind.

McCarron, Pate share lead in Toshiba Classic

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif.

Former UCLA players Scott McCarron and Steve Pate shared the lead at 8-under 63 after the first round of the Champions Tour’s Toshiba Classic.

McCarron is making his eighth start on the tour after turning 50 in July.
