If you are looking for some intelligent horror on this Halloween day, try these titles (most are also available for digital download from major retailers):

v “Kwaidan”: The Criterion Collection has released a gorgeously restored high-def edition of Japanese master Masaki Kobayashi’s extraordinary 1964 ghost story. (criterion.com)

v “The Brood”: A minor masterpiece starring Oliver Reed and Samantha Eggar and directed by David Cronenberg, this 1979 bio-horror shocker is another classic title restored in high-def by the Criterion Collection. It’s about a mentally disturbed woman whose body produces monstrous little killer babies whenever she is angry. (criterion.com)

v “Armies of Darkness” (Blu-ray): Sam Raimi’s third film in his “Evil Dead” trilogy is a horror comedy of quite devilish proportions. (shoutfactory.com)

v “American Horror Story: Freak Show”: FX’s extraordinary thriller was set last season among the creepy folks operating a freak show in post-WWII Jupiter, Fla. (foxconnect.com; $49.98 DVD; $69.99 Blu-ray; not rated)

v “Alleluia”: Belgian master of the monstrous and macabre, Fabrice Du Welz is in top form with this psychosexual thriller starring Laurent Lucas as a heartless hustler who seduces and robs lonely women. His latest victim is so smitten, she offers to help him commit his crimes. (musicboxfilms.com)

“World Series” (8 p.m., Fox): Game 4.

“Ash vs. Evil Dead” (9 p.m., Starz): Break out the chain saw. Ash Williams (Bruce Campbell), the super-sauve, dimwitted, self-centered, one-handed monster fighter, is back in action on Halloween, and he’s just groovy, baby. This 10-episode revival of Sam Raimi’s beloved tongue-in-cheek horror franchise finds Ash lying low, working as a stock boy and living in a trailer. Soon he’ll have to face his demons – “personal and literal,” the producers note. Brace yourself for buckets of blood and lots of laughs.

“The Returned” (10 p.m., Sundance TV): The wait is over. Season 2 of the creepy-good French series “The Returned” finally brings us back to the small mountain town where residents who were presumed dead come back to life – without all the yucky zombie makeup.
